Hmm it would seem 7 and 17 are 'more random' than other numbers...

OH GOD GET ME SOME LOTTERY TICKETS~~

I know what you're doing but I'm not going to ruin your results by saying anything. :)

Fantastic poll. I wish more creative polls like these were there instead of the 'how often do you shave your pubes' polls

i deliberately tried to pick one i thought would be uncommon and picked 18, nothing you choose is ever random

  • 7 is statistically the most common lucky number. I picked 7 cuz I was born on the seventh. My uncle was born 7/7/77. Cool right?

People don't answer the random choice in a truly random fashion, ever. There's probably nothing random at all about how most people answered.

Getting all statistical now are we? :O true though, by picking ourselves we have introduced bias, the only way we can truly pick it in a random fashion would be to use a random number generator

Well possibly if you were asked to pick your favorite number, then what you thought would be the least picked and the most picked numbers and maybe a few more questions ...and then asked to pick a random number after that it might be a little more true.

    • That's the point.

What if the result is negative though? Like what if you pick 20 and instead of getting $20 or 20 ice cream cones you get 20 punches to the head?

Heh, I guess it's the pessimist in me, gotta plan for the worst!

I picked 9, but to be honest it wasn't truly random, I don't see how any of the answers could be random-as soon as you're asked to pick, your mind automatically thinks things like why, what could be the outcome, what's my favorite number, what number is relevant to me in whatever way, what number can I explain has a meaning or justification (mathematical, symbolic etc), I want to pick this number but everyone else will pick it so I'll pick another one....I think the real answer just can't be found without creating several different polls or preliminary questions asking for thoughtful answers to finally determine the real random answer-if that makes any sense??

The fact that 7 has the most votes kind of proves how un-random it really is, and probably twice as many people would've picked 7 but didn't because they thought 7 was the obvious choice.

          Ah, I don't know...

If you can truly get someone to empty their mind and then say absolutely the first thing they think of, when asking for a number (1 to 10), over 50% will say 7, for a flower they say rose, and for a vegetable carrot. I do it as a party trick. If you write it on the underside of your seventh finger (fourth finger right hand when palms up) and then show the person, look I even wrote it on the 7th finger, they're truly spooked, even though it's no more or less likely than you guessing they'd say seven in the first place.

I actually did pick the very first number that came to mind. And stuck it. I went for 17. I suspect for the same reasons people go for 7.

P.S. You're right. It's not random in the slightest. It's psychological.
