Ran over some hillbilly's ladder, is it normal that i bothered stopping?

They had an old wooden ladder laid down across the street and I accidentally ran over it, breaking it into little pieces. Is it normal that I stopped just so they could yell at me? One of them told me it was a brand new ladder and I better give them $100 for it. I left after an older one of them inspected my car and then told the others "we don't have a case". Why did I even bother stopping?

    Maybe the ladder protected your car from the land mines.

    I don't see how it can't be considered normal to stop and check if you've damaged someone else's property even if the owners were stupid enough to have it on the road. That said, I probably would've checked for damage to my car first
