Quality audio output.

I have discovered in recent years that music is a whole different world when listened to with a good pair of headphones or in a vehicle with a decent sound system as opposed to some crappy ear-buds or some crappy computer speakers, even some external computer speakers if they don't have any base to them. What do you think?

Have you experienced the difference that a good quality audio output source can provide?

Absolutely. I never skimp on headphones and have gone for Sennheiser kit for the last five years (and won't be changing any time soon). I listened to a pair of HD800s in an audio shop and was so impressed I almost bought them, despite them costing over a thousand pounds.

At the moment I have two sets of HD380s (one for home, one for work) and even though they were just a hundred and fifty quid each, they're almost as good as the HD800s. Until I switched to Sennheiser, I had no idea headphones could be quite this good.

Even the cheaper end of the range is good. I have HD205-IIs as well, which are DJ headphones and have a flip cup (which I use for playing keyboard but also being able to occasionally hear the laptop or metronome).

I have a decent set of noise-cancelling ear buds (which really work) but they're not comfortable and I've never heard music sound as good as through good headphones. For anyone who listens to music often, treat yourself. You're missing out otherwise.

    • Sennheiser are the ones I use :) I have the HD428 model and they are great! I think I payed around $60 for them. Not sure what the converted value of that is for pounds...

For the longest time, I just listened to music through my laptop or (crappy) ipod earbuds. I had no idea of the quality in the music that I was missing out on because of it.

I love to listen to my heaphones, but I don't like not being able to hear what's around me. I live by myself. I also don't have a sound system in my vehicle anymore, so that option is out as well :(

I know the model! I recommended HD428s to my friend because he didn't need a flip cup and just wanted music to sound good with good bass. They're about $100 here (everything is more expensive here) but he loves them. He'd never had closed back headphones before and couldn't believe how deep and clear the sound was. He even uses them to watch TV.

You made a good choice there. I really do recommend Sennheiser to absolutely everyone.

        • Haha, it was just happenstance that i got them really. I needed a pair of headphones and these were the ones i saw. I think there was a different brand that were a little cheaper, but they didn't look as good quality-wise. These also came with a 6mm adaptor plug, so that sealed the deal :)

I'd love to get into the world of really nice headphones. Unfortunately, money is a limiting factor :/

These are the headphones I use at home for my guitar amp, Audio-Technica ATH-M30s: http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/resource_library/product_images/9f00760866f02187/ath_m30_1.jpg I really like them for what I paid. They're clear and well-balanced. They cost me £45, or around $73 USD.

These are the headphones I got free with my mobile phone, black WeSC Basses: http://www.avforums.com/forums/attachments/home-cinema-hi-fi-classified-adverts/351452d1352567831-sale-wesc-bass-unisex-dj-headphones-image.jpg They're okay. They look quite flashy and the bass is quite good. I use them when I'm listening to music with a bass that is quite difficult to hear with little earphones, including some Less Than Jake songs which use a saxophone I can't always hear behind the trombone. They were free, but they supposedly are worth £90, or $145 USD.

    These are my cheap-as-chips earphones,
Sony MDRE818LPs: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5340459.htm They cost £8, or $13 USD. They're alright; as good as the Apple earphone that cost 4 times as much. I use them when I'm out and about.

  • I use a pair of genelec monitors with an apogee duet sound card. Things sound nice.

Music is supposed to be quality, you wouldn't want to watch a low quality film on a shitty tv and its the same concept. You need good hardware.

And don't forget to ensure that the music files you are listening to are of the highest quality. 5mb a song at least

    • Is "airport express" a brand name?

YES! Very much so.:P Nothing is worse than bad earphones. Actually, that's not entirely true, having only one of the ear things work is just the worst thing ever. Or when they're flickering on and off. One of my biggest pet peeves, that is.

Anyway, it can make a huge difference. You're not going to get the same quality from headphones from Poundland or something like that.:P

    • You would be surprised how many people don't know that there are different sounds that come out of each earpiece on most music.

      I am unfamiliar with "Poundland."

Think dime-store. That's about the closest equivalent.
