Shackling women during childbirth use to be a common practice, regardless of their criminal record. It is cruel and unusual punishment, hopefully we'll move past it.
You are correct!! My mom told me about my birth-she was essentially forced to "perform" for interns or students (a whole class of them, not just one) and was strapped down to the bed by the wrists with leather buckled straps. This was in 1978.
Sounds horrifying.
I saw it in a documentary, "The Business of Being Born." This was a result of men thinking they were better at giving birth then women. And many doctors still make a practice of administering drugs if the women doesn't progress according to the doctors schedule. So many things wrong with the system.
Yes, that's a problem-men thinking they can do anything and everything better than women. Major problem!!
I always found this to ring very true in the area of home design. Men don't (or didn't) think of things like how hard it would be to clean (traffic-wise), what rooms should be in what order, just terrible designs.
I don't think a new mother unshackled could run away too fast or too far!!
Some people will do unthinkable things, so it's not any kind of guarantee that a female in labor might do something like harm someone or try to escape, but shackling is extreme. I'd think a guard or two in the room would suffice. Or at th very least, shackle her untill she's very close to birth and then let her free to move about at that time.
Some births take forever, too, so shackling for at least some period of time is pretty much essential.
I don't really have the whole good answer here....I'd think in most cases, everything would be OK with just a guard on duty to watch her, but then again, there would be no doubt cases in which something terrible happens that could've been prevented....like the child getting hurt or killed or used as a human shield of sorts to aid in an escape.
I guess, just don't get arrested!! That would be best!!
I don't think that safe for the baby being born. Doesn't the mother need to be comfortable?
