Price of designer/brand name clothing

Is it normal that I buy unbranded, discount clothing because I find buying designer or branded clothing comparable to:

going to my next door neighbour, who's selling a beautiful looking sports car made by children from petrified dog sh*t, and happily paying his asking price of 50 million dollars despite the fact that the car cost him almost nothing. Then, obligingly giving him an extra 20 million dollars because that's how much it cost him to advertise him car in every newspaper that I don't read across America, and logically I should pay for that.

my friends couldn't give a flying f**k about this, even the ones who mainly buy unbranded clothing. Am I normal?

And yes, I am aware of the foul conditions that the people who produce the clothing are required to work in. Don't bring it up, as it's highly likely you won't be answering my question by doing so.

I think that very few shops sell fair-trade clothing anyway. All that most brands do is to increase their own profit margin. I tend to go to discount shops a lot. You can get great stuff a lot cheaper and it's fun picking out things. IMHO a lot of ppl don't trust their own taste enough and therefore go to the same high-street shops all the time so that items are pre-selected for them.

Some top named brands also has sweatshops and underprivileged people working for nothing. I watched two documentaries on it and my mum worked in one where I used to live although it wasn't a sweatshop but the pay was very low and tedious! (i did work experience there, i didn't get paid)She has a great job now and lives comfortably but no name brands and designer brands sometimes have the same working conditions. I don't like name brands either and it's not because I can't afford them, it's because in high school if u didn't have the name brands you didn't fit in so I had the names and my parents and i paid hundreds if not thousands on them and it wasn't until I left school I thought how stupid it all is. Now I have my own style and I'll only buy and wear it if I really like it weather it's from an expensive surf shop or from Kmart.
Wear what u feel comfortable in, not what others wear.

  • Brand names make me mad too, but I don't see what you're trying to say here.

yeah its normal. so you're basically trying to support "fair trade" jeans?

but btw, who makes the discount jeans? you may only pay $20 instead of $70, but sweatshop ppl are still probably only earning $0.20 on either pair.

  • Everyone has their ideals.. so yes it's normal to be against brand names. Although if you like the goods and you can afford it, why not? Just don't try to enforce it on other people.

    i dont support brands either.
i work as a free lance graphic artist and i sell my work because it is what i live from, but i refuse to lie about materials in order to increase the price insanely(two of my friends who work as designers do that).
they work out of stuff they find in the junk, litterally, and tell their buyers that it was bought on an antique shop or something.
result: they are both living a flashy life and have a car that costs more than my house, but still, i am happy about my work and i am proud of myself when it comes to that.
maybe you and i are not normal, but..i like us.
