Preference for the male or female singing voice?

It would be interesting to find out whether people have a preference for their own or the opposite gender's singing voice or not.
The first part of the answer relates to your own gender, the second to your preference.

Female - prefer female vocalists 34
Female - prefer male vocalists 78
Female - no preference 31
Male - prefer female vocalists 76
Male - prefer male vocalists 46
Male - no preference 22

Depends on the type of music.

If it's rap or rock I prefer male voices

If it's pop or electronic I prefer female voices.

I'd rather listen to a woman sing than a man. Of the men I do like singing, a surprising number of them are gay.

Please don't hate me for this:

I think that female singers sound best in Jazz.

    And SOMETIMES Soul.

Don't get me wrong, I love singers like, Karen carpenter etc

There is something about the male voice that "outshines" the female voice when it comes to other genres.

    There are exceptions ofcourse.

I generally prefer male vocals, just because most of the well-known female vocalists are presented with "pop" music or genres I don't particularly care for. With male vocals, they are more diverse (well as it appears they get more recognition). It seems to be a hit and miss type of thing, when I favor female vocalists.

I know a lot of vocals techniques are very similar for men and women. So they are both capable of making me feel emotional. I especially like certain timbres, which both genders are capable of recreating.

I just like listening to amazing vocalists who can hit the high notes and whistle registers.

I can go with either one, but I tend to listen to deep male voices like Bowie's or Leonard Cohen's type.

I don't prefer one over the other. I go both ways ;) some of my favorite males would be eddie vedder and thom yorke, and females would be, ahh, bjork, natalie merchant and delores o'something. Damn it just left my head! Ya know, the woman from the cranberries. Now I'm not even sure if its delores. I think it is. Oh poo. And more recently, adele.

I like male vocals a lot more than female. There's maybe 4 songs sung by female on my ipod compared to the thousand male. It's better...but hard to explain without getting hate.

    • I'd really like to know your thoughts. Taste is completely subjective. You shouldn't be criticized for it :)

I've always preferred female singers. Idk why, maybe because it helps me identify more with the song and the sentiments they express. Male voices also sound more generic to me somehow and I find it harder to tell them all apart within their categories. To me a lot of female artists sound more distinct. Perhaps my ears are more attuned to higher-pitched sounds. One of my favourite male vocalists is Robert Plant.

  • I don't really have a preference, completely depends on the genre and style. For some reason I really like male falsettos (MJ, Prince, Bee Gees etc.).

    • Me too! Love it. What do you think of Mika?

      • I like him a lot, he's like our generation's Freddie Mercury if you ask me. Speaking of falsettos, MGMT did it great on Electric Feel but you probably heard that one already.

There's this male Japanese singer who can can either sing like a man or can sing like a woman. Can't remember what it's called. I think it's falsetto. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHzwaws172w
