Pleasures being neccessities?

I've been thinking about this weird issue of selfishness. Talking about how everybody is selfish to keep some form of entertainment or small pleasure or luxury when it could be used for something better. As in, paying our monthly internet bill instead of giving that money off to the homeless or charity. Been wondering if we actually somewhat need it. Because without the extra misc. forms of entertainment we would just be staying alive off with just simple living doing nothing. Sort of bringing a little bit of a hedonistic way of thinking. We would have the basic necessities to live but no pleasure left after that. So is pleasure a necessity? And can pleasure be selfishness when you could give away the pleasures to give somebody basic necessities to live?

Unrelated but just wanted to say I've been here for an hour and I already like it. :-)

Pretty irrelevant but have you seen that video of dolphins passing around a puffer fish, to get high xD Animals seek pleasure too.
I'd say it's one of our most natural instincts and yeah, a necessity. When you have depression you get little pleasure out of anything and although you're physically alive, mentally it's torture.

  • Doing what you like with the money that you rightfully earned is never selfish. Hell, every lawful citizen pays taxes, which partially go to government programs that aid the poor and sick.

In fact, I really hate the socialist/communist mentality that obligates and forces people to give the profits from their own hard work.

However, I myself intend to give to charities and volunteer to help animals and people in need.

  • The fact is you can live without internet, cable, smartphones and all this shit. These things have not been around for all that long and ppl found entertainment perfectly fine without them. If you give them up tho, you’ll be using the money to buy movie tickets at $15 a pop, not for feeding the homeless.

Very true, people did find ways to be entertained and happy before the internet and smartphones. But also, it was easier for people to go without them when they didn't exist and people then didn't have a clue that such a thing would exist in the future. Now, with people being so used to them being there and them being so used to using them, to have it suddenly taken away now would be a much harsher sting.
