Peoples feelings are their own fault

Why does it seem most people are unable to control their feelings?
If I don't want to feel something, I simply choose not to.
Nobody can make someone else feel something unless they let them.
This causes me some social problems because I constantly "offend" others. I cannot say I am offended by anything because I don't let what others think matter to me. If I offend someone I see it as their problem and do not care.
Why are people so thin skinned and weak. It is pathetic.

I'm with you. I like to minimize my emotional reactions and take action on what I think. But, some people maximize their emotional reactions because they like it. in doing this, they make the world a bad place. They should take medications. It would help them be more like me.

I'm unsure if what you say indicates serene detachment from the world and an ability to view problems in a mature, objective way, or if you just lack empathy.

I agree that people do get completely bent out of shape over the most trivial things. Some people are totally self-involved, and feel entitled to a idyllic, life where everyone panders to their every physical and emotional need.

I also believe that, when dealing with people, the only choice we have when it comes to their behavior is how we respond to it.

Unfortunately, most of us have to deal with people all the time, and many of us sooner or later need allies and supporters in our work and personal lives. So even from the perspective of pure self-interest, it's not wise to be completely indifferent the feelings of others, no matter how pathetic we may find them.

Personally, I've found that when I run in to one someone who sees themselves as a delicate flower, keeping my mouth shut is usually a viable option. If you really believe someone is pathetic, they aren't worth the time and trouble necessary to tell them this. It's not like expressing your opinion will change their view of the world, all it will change is their view of you.

  • Sociopaths have no empathy.

    • I get told I'm a sociopath a lot and it has made me wonder.
However I am not violent and I have personal morals I live by.
I am also able to care about people I am close to.
So I don't think I am fully sociopathic but I do lack empathy unless I decide I want to be empathetic.

      • Maybe I was a bit harsh but I can't relate to not caring about people's feelings. When someone is hurting I hurt too.

Sociopaths cannot choose to show empathy, the original poster stated that they choose not to let things get to them.

I am exactly like this. I totally understand. The only thing that can really get to me though is if someone I truly care for betrays be but I don't care if most people insult me. It's only those that I am very close with or have very strong feeling for. I don't let people get to me. I'm actually very happy to find someone who think like me because I have been trying to get people to understand this but they won't.

I totally understand. Part of me gets really aggravated around emotional people, and the other part can empathise. I get really frustrated when people freak out over triveal stupid shit but if someone dies then that's obviously different. I just think society is completely out of control these days and it's gotten people so bound up in their emotions and couple that with all the pharmaceuticals they are probably on it's just a disaster. It's annoying when there's actually important shit to put your energy into, but people waste it on the most ridiculous things, but I know it's because of much deeper issues they can't control themselves.

    • Agree. I am sympathetic on important matters such as death and war but no sympathy for petty shit.

If you're talking about people just playing up drama for attention I understand. spending all this time online looking at crap has caused people to think that everyone is their own celebrity and people care about the small trivial details of their lives, or that they want to argue with you over your opinions of things.
