People who shop on holidays suck

I only mean the three big ones, Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter. These are the holidays people should be with their family. It makes me sick when retail stores, malls and specialty places stay open and force their low-paid employees to work the holidays instead of being with their families. This year my local mall is open in thanksgiving, I think its un-American not to give off for this holiday. These people are paid next to nothing and will have to work the next 24 hours on black Friday anyway

Of course some places must stay open like hospitals and gas stations but those employees at least get paid extra. Nobody should have to give up special time with their family because of corporate greed.
If you agree with this please make a point not to shop on holidays, you have 362 other days to buy your stuff.

ps if youre Jewish or Muslim or whatever then you should get your holidays off too, Im referring to mainstream holidays in the US because most people still celebrate Christmas and Easter.

I think it's pretty standard that when you take a job you know that it is either a job where you work holidays or not. That means to me that if you don't want to work holidays, you don't take the job. Why are you putting everything on management when the employee took the job knowing the score? In my profession I worked most often on holidays, as that's when my employers wished to use their yachts. No overtime, no days off to make up for it. That's the job!

Gotta agree. When I worked retail, I was fine with working holidays because I really needed the money. It comes with the territory of working on the service industry - you work when you're needed, not when you want to. That's kind of the point of uh... Service.

Nope, it didn't. That was my chosen profession and I was very happy doing my job.
Enjoyable times with friends and family need not take place on any specific day, especially those you are talking about, X-Mas, T-giving, Easter etc. which are just made up dates on a calender; they have no more basis in reality than the myth of Plymouth Rock and the Pilgrims, which was historical gospel, when I went to high school. Does it really matter THAT much to you what day you are with those you love celebrating whatever?

        • Yes it does, that's why I wrote this post.
If you truly don't mind working on holidays that's great but youre in the minority.
I also believe for religious reasons its wrong to work on Christmas and Easter.
I just hate how greedy our society has become that making money is more important that anything else.

Apparently Christ wasn't even born on Christmas day and Easter is a myth. So the days are just made up, which is mt point.

I found out a few days ago that it's not just malls and retail stores that get busier on holidays. Why are so many burgers being ordered on Halloween?

      • Black Friday isn't a holiday. Christmas, Easter, thanksgiving ...

The Holiday sales in my store alone when I worked retail pulled our store into the black status and paid for a LARGE amount of our hours and paychecks. Working the holidays, for a lot of employees, is the most hours and possible overtime we will get all year. I worked seasonally for Toys R Us during the holidays as my first job to save up for a car and no one in my family was butthurt to see me go work to pay for my ride so I could get a better job and I did. I get overtime for Holidays now. My Mom worked at McDonald's and never got holidays off. Oh well, she isn't the only one. Life isn't gum drops and roses.

Holiday sales often bring a lot of stores into the black for the year. Without them, many more employees wouldn't have jobs. It sucks being away from your family but it's the service industry and service is what it is about. Good luck creating a world where everyone collectively remembers to buy all of their groceries by Thanksgiving or finish all of their Christmas shopping 100%. For every cop to buy his lunch early and every grandma to just hold out til after the holiday because her portable heater burned out Christmas Eve. That's what it would take for Holidays to be days off for everyone.

  • Did you all not read I said " three days Christmas thanksgiving and Easter" not the holiday season. I have no problem wit stores being open extra or Black Friday but if you all shop on Christmas you all suck.

I've had jobs where I had to work holidays, but they also paid me double time or at least time and a half which was pretty much standard, as well it should be, my friend.

Well we have become a society of connivence and expect everything to be opened during the holiday season.

I think it's up to businesses whether or not they want to stay open during national holidays, and up to employees whether or not they want to work for companies that do.

In the UK, most people who work Christmas, New Years or on Bank Holidays get paid extra, anyway.

    I think you're whinging about nothing :P
