People that say "sniper" instead of "sniper rifle"

Is it normal to hate people that refer to accurate rifles (sniper rifles) as "snipers" or "sniper guns"? Does anyone else feel this way?

"Sniper gun" is sort of a weird thing to say, but "sniper" seems fine. I mean, obviously, "sniper rifle" is clearer and more correct (as dappled pointed out, a "sniper" is a person), but it's not a big deal.

Although it isn't correct, it's nothing to get your panties in a twist over.

To snipe is to shoot at someone from a concealed place so a sniper is either a person doing this or the name of the rifle they're doing it with.

I thought Sniper was a position is it not the correct terminology? I have never heard the term "Sniper rifle: but I have heard people refer to them by each type of gun. I am sorry but this is a bit confusing the way you wrote it.
