People that buy contemporary/minimalist/abstract/modern art r stupid.

I saw this program on TV where this retired couple put all of their money over many years (the Vogels) into art that looks like any kid could make in less than an hour. Most of it I wouldn't have hung in my garage.

If you actually read about these so called 'Modernist' artists/painters and how much thought and experiences were put into their way of expressing themselves through art, you'll find paradoxes of the trained 'classicals' and these Modernist painters. Classical paintings are all about perfecting the anatomy and trying to achieve mastery which to some can be so blunt. My favorite painter is Piet Mondrian, his later works dwell in theology and philosophy and his minimalist and stripped-down to basics approach takes more wit to comprehend.

Art is a big and difficult concept, just because you don't like it doesn't make it not art. Therefore be careful when judging an entire art movement in one go. A lot of modern art is very thoughtful and meaningful whereas some of it is utter rubbish. Maybe have a look at the work of Paula Rego or Ron Mueck, these are both modern artists who work figuratively.

And I prefer instant coffee to ground.

    Hey, it takes all sorts.

Just because someone else judges something, art for instance, by a different yardstick than the one you use, doesn't mean that they are wrong.

Guessing you're interested in art, and have your own opinions of what it should or shouldn't be, you should be open minded enough to realise that others see things which you might not, just as they realise you might see things which they do not.

You should use your knowledge and opinions to grow. Your thoughts are what matter, not those of others; though, in your wisdom, you can accept and acknowledge theirs too.

A I normal for thinking that minimalist art that looks like it could be done by a child is a waste of money?

yes, you're very normal. I hate abstract and geometric and... paint blotch art. It's so pointless. I like to draw people, fantasy, comics, not a circle. OOOH a RED circle.
