People i hate as characters in my novel

Is it normal to make up characters based on people you hate and put them in your novel/book/story?
I'm a writer and whenever I meet somebody I really hate I name them something similar to their actual name (example: Daniel Johnson would become David Johnston).

I make those characters the most irritating and annoying ones and I always kill them off in a horrible way. I know that the people they're based off of will never know it's them, but the satisfaction that I get from being sort of their god and controlling whether they live or die is almost as good as sex to me.

Is this a normal thing or am I some sort of crazy person?

I think it is normal. I mean, I do something similar, just in the opposite manner. When I am writing I will take the first name of a character I absolutely hate and make him/her into somebody I like.

This is brilliant! I really need to get my butt in gear and work on my novel again too. I love writing (it's my passion). Maybe we will all be famous writers someday :)

Yes. It's totally normal. Most writers base their characters on somebody they know/come across.

Really, if you are a writer you shouldn't have to ask if that is normal.

  • I'm trying to finish my first book and I know exactly what you mean. As a writer, I have done research on this and I have learned that writers tend to focus a great deal of what they know into their books. By writing what you know or based upon people you know, you are less likely to mix up your characters and keep a flow of consistancy within your book.

For instance, my fiance is a main character in my book. I over-exaggerated "her" character and changed this or that but she is still an overweight person with a far better-than-average heart.

For additional help, try watcing the editorials of the DVDs you rent. Often, you will get a lot of good insight on what works and what does not.
