People are nice to me to my face but.

So I get on very well with a lot of people at my school in fact probably most and I have very few altercations with anyone. Which is why it confuses me that sometimes I feel like I'm getting laughed at behind my back. Is this me blowing up a situation in my head or am I genuinely (for want of a less stigmatized word) less popular than I thought I was. This isn't about wishing I was 'the most popular kid in school' or anything.
I just would like to know where I stand with people instead of being uncertain

If you come across as too enthusiastic, optimistic or naive, people will talk behind your back.

Unless there's evidence this is happening, you need to stop dwelling on it and/or do something about your self eseteem.

I think a lot of people do talk about others behind their backs, but if it's especially malicious it can be shitty. Has this been something common in your life in the past?
