I can be tough with my sons, but If my daughters get teary eyed and hug me, they melt my heart. It is the nature of male to protect females. I don't think the girls ever abused their tears. If it wasn't honest, I think I'd know. Still, the boys have to take life on the chin and the girls are allowed to be soft. This works. My sons know I expect them to be strong, and my daughters feel protected. What I seen as the kids have gotten older is that the girls are comfortable expecting their brothers to protect them. My sons treat their sisters with respect. My 15 yr old son and my daughter 16, came home from a cold walk. She was wearing his coat. I was proud of him. I've also seen the boys spend their money to buy their sisters meals when they are out. The girls for their part, love their brothers, and are great at baking cookies and treats which the boys appreciate.
Tears don't work as much on my sons as they do on me, but I've seen them comfort their sisters with hugs when they are sad. It fosters love in the family. My daughter came into the kitchen this morning all sleeply eyed. She hugged me then felt against her brother for another hug and yawned; good morning. He kissed her forehead. It was sweet.
