Paralyzed when trying to sleep

Its been going on ever since i was in 5th grade. On a weekly basis, everytime I try to go to sleep, I end up opening my eyes (While I am sleeping). From that point, I can look around with my eyes but I cant move my body, at all. The fact that I am not in control of my body scares me, I start sweating and trying get up, after enough struggling I can finally move. I try to go to sleep again, the same thing happens around 3 more times until I can finally sleep. While im "Paralyzed" I also start to see hallucinations around my room. And Im positive that none of this is a dream. Was wondering if any of this happens to anyone else.

It's called sleep paralysis or sometimes I've heard it referred to as "the devil's grip." It's a common symptom of narcolepsy or can occur if your sleeping patterns have recently been irregular (i.e. napping for long periods of time, staying up for long periods of time, microsleeping, etc.). Often times it's accompanied with strong feelings of paranoia, auditory and visual hallucinations and anxiety. I've had it multiple times, once when I fell asleep in my basement. The worst.

You're in between the dream world and the waking world. Next time it happens, try astral traveling. Consciously go somewhere else but not physically.

When you go to sleep you go through what is called a sleep cycle. There is different parts of your sleep cycle. Basically this cycle is you hitting rem(Rapid Eye Movement) sleep multiple times.

After so many times of hitting rem sleep you are woken up. Rem cycle is also when most people experience dreams. Since your brain is active even when you are asleep you experience Activity.

So to prevent you from doing things like run, walk around and do that stuff in your sleep your brain releases a chemical. This chemical temporary paralyzes your body when you are asleep. When you do not finish your sleep cycle sometimes your body does not wake up fully. So your brain will be vaguely aware of whats going on but your body wont move.

Now people that do not have enough of the chemical released when they are sleeping it results in things like sleepwalking. If you do things like sleep walk and other sort of actions like this in your sleep than your brain is not releasing the paralyzing chemicals.

And also I tend to get it if I take naps during the day or going back to bed after being up, and sometimes when I'm dozing on my back.

Yes it's sleep paralysis, I get it too, but I can't open my eyes but I can hear everything that is going on and I can hear and feel things, that aren't in the room when Im finally able to move again, usually I hear things getting closer and closer until they're actually on me and can feel things sitting on me or laying or gripping me, once it felt like someone jumped on me and was really strong and trying to kill me or rape me, when I came out if it I jumped out of bed and burst into tears, it can be very scary!! I read it's due to an irregular sleep pattern or change in sleeping habits.

...it's called sleep paralysis/apnea. It usually happens when you exercise or eat junk food right before bed. Lol

Don't listen to these loons about astral projection, demons, or going other worlds. Sleep paralysis, seeing bizarre stuff, hearing things, etc, happens to people sometimes & is actually normal, but it can go awry & out of hand in some people. Do some research on it yourself and see that many people suffer from the same thing. See a doctor who is a sleep expert. Maybe they can help you learn how to sleep better.

    • Truth be told, each person is different. However, it is certainly "comforting" to be able to categorize something right away and be done with it. And, it sure makes you look like , "The Voice of Reason"..

Yeah bc I don't believe in nonsense, it bothers you. It's people who believe in such fairy-tales that need them for comfort. Nice try at flipping it though. Fail.

I believe in evidence based reason, logic, & being rational. There isn't always comfort in it, but it's better than living in delusion.

& do you really think this guy whop is suffering will be helped by being told such bunk such as: he is visiting other wolrds, seeing demons, astral projecting etc? People should keep their delusions to themselves. Ignorance helps no one.

You're entitled to your opinion, and so is everyone else.

There's a lot of things in this world that can't be explained, but that doesn't mean they aren't real.

        • Well, I am not as presumptive to believe that the OP is a "guy". That's a problem... Assuming the unproven.

Furthermore, people are allowed to fart out their opinions to their heart's content on IIN. You have.

It's called sleep paralysis. I get it and it's rly rly bad. Google it and there's things u can do to not make it happen. Like don't take naps during the day. Don't sleep on your back. Etc. Idk if there's a cure I doubt it. Good luck.

  • Very recently, I was watching, of all things, an episode of T.A.P.S....those paranormal investigators ( who are full-time plumbers). They talked about "EMF" readings in one episode where they where investigating a haunting in this woman's basement. She swore that she always felt someone behind her when she went down to this basement to do laundry. Turns out she had a light bulb and some improperly wired circuits that were exposed above her and just behind her. Those guys ran readings on the wiring and found the EMF (electromotive force) to be extremely high. Their conclusion was that EMF can cause the sensation of a presence or of someone being behind you. Hindsight being 20/20, I do remember buying a cheap electronic clock prior to many of these experiences I had and when I removed it from my room, these "visits" stopped.

OMG!!!! I used to get that all the time. I would hear a lot of voices too. It stopped happening when I was about seventeen. My parents never believed me. And It used to happen so often that I had to bring myself to talk with my best friends grandmother, who was supposedly, "a psychic".

Despite that I had this stuff happening to me from a very little age up, I was still teetering on the subject of the supernatural, whether I had believed in it or not. However, I was 100% positive that I was WIDE awake when this stuff was happening.

I used to see them and hear them. My friends grandmother told me, that I was being "in tact by my spirit" and that I was very hypersensitive, so it became easy for them to "talk/come" through me. (My parents thought this was a bunch of bull shit.) She told me to pray for them, and she said, if you simply ask for them to leave, they will leave. Strangely she was right. I would ask them to leave, and they left. I haven't had an experience with them since.

And for your own good, I wouldn't go around telling people about your experiences. People will think you're nuts, or just bull shitting them. I know I got a lot of strange looks.

  • I have had this so many times it had me interested but it is like the other commenter said its because you are half in a dream and half awake I looked it up quite a while ago and it said because something releases in your brain that makes it as if you are asleep but without dreams etc. I remember having it I wasnt even able to talk.
