Pain during/after pap smear/std test?

When I have a pap smear or std test, it hurts so bad when the doctor scrapes my cervix with that cotton bud thing that the nurse has to literally hold me down. Even afterwards I can feel where he's scraped it. I know I don't have any STDs or anything as all my results came back as negative. Is this normal? Thanks.

  • Yeah it fucking hurts
They do it too fast, pinch you "accidently" and SCRAPE YOUR CERVIX
I hate it but it happens

I think it's normal to tense up during a pap and that helps to cause any pain you're feeling. My legs practically go numb from the nerves. Although, I never really experience pain, just discomfort. I have noticed that women are a lot more gentle than male doctors. I always ask for a woman when I have to get a pap. Just hope you never have to get a cervical biopsy. That is pain! They literally take this thing that looks like a hole punch and cut off a piece of your cervix. I pray for normal paps because I never want to go through that again.

Ugh, I hate pap smears. I think it hurts and I hate that cramping feeling. They don't have to hold me down or anything, but I don't like it at all. I think it's pretty normal.

    It's called vaginismus.

It's an involuntary response, sort of like your eyelid shutting when you think somethings going to poke your eye. It's your PC muscle going into spasm and there's not really a lot you can do to stop it once it starts. It makes getting a PAP excruciatingly painful.

Maybe your doctor could refer you to a gyno, who would be more knowledgeable about it.

It can be normal to have cramping pain after.

Never happened to me!! have you ever been pregnant or given birth?! I am hoping they also had a feel around inside you to see everything was normal :) ( trying not to sound gross ) but either if you were just checking for std...a woman should have a annual check up every year due to ovarian cancer, cysts etc :) I am sure you are fine though! :) we are all different :)

Yep. I used to feel uncomfortable for a while also. Sometimes I would spot a bit after. But it never really hurt that bad during the procedure. I guess everyone has different pain tolerances.
