Other people's stupidity makes me depressed.

Frequently, when I go online, I see tons of stupid and ignorant things and people, and it affects my mind negatively. It makes me angry, sad and depressed at the same time. I wish my hands could extend past my computer screen and slap the offenders, then proceed to cry in an intelligent person's arms. Is this normal to feel this way?

I feel much the same way. People always say "It's only the internet. It doesn't matter" but I tend to feel people's semi-anonymity online makes them speak a "truth" they wouldn't speak in real life. And that makes me most depressed of all; that this is what people really think.

This is where positive thinking comes in and saves the day...

Yes, this is natural 100%. I've contemplated suicide over the endless amounts of ignorance & stupidity I endure on a daily basis. I feel like everyone around me half the time is an idiotic moron & have no real intention of it.
    I honestly understand your situation.

~Don't forget. There are very few people in this world that are intelligent. Don't make the percent decrease. ;)

Stupid people caused my depression and that was before the internet. Stupid people should be culled from the world like the parasites they are.

Dude, I really think you're just disappointed in humanity. There's something to be taken from the point made that 'stupid/smart/good/bad' have no true definition. The real point is that your issue is perspective based. Your perspective of the world and the reality of our world are clashing with one another. I don't know how old you are or what your upbringing was, but if you have an idealistic perspective of things you're going to have a harder time coping with the sort of abrasive reality that exists. I grew up kind of in a rough situation and I'd always thought that the world was better than how I'd lived. That people were better out there somewhere, and that humanity was the epitome of hope because throughout history we have proven ourselves to be progressive creatures. I daydreamed as a means of escapism, and what I should have been doing is coping. The older I got the more depressed I became, because this reality I'd taught myself to believe in just wasn't the truth. Other people came from shittier backgrounds than me with, some people grew up great and were just straight ass holes, and many had what I considered to be negative philosophies. I felt isolated, and I felt like we just lived in this world of utter shit. And, to an extent, we do. But, like I said--it's all a matter of perspective.

The only thing that ever gave me solace was this: You can't hate something unless you love it first. Every emotion, I believe, has a contrasting emotion that occurs when disappointment happens or a contrast in expectations occurs. When you love something and it disappoints you it causes heart break, depression, anger--you grieve the sort of death of that idea you had of this thing. I really believe you're just an optimistic, idealistic person who is being let down by what you're seeing and you're over analyzing these situations which is taking you aback. Though intelligence is also defined by perspective, I truly think you might have an analytical nature which often causes people to become depressed. There's a great truth in the statement "ignorance is bliss".

Perhaps your perspective of humanity was that of hope, honor, and dignity and now you're seeing that people truly aren't like that. You can't dwell on your hurt, though. Instead of becoming heart broken focus on your own positivity. Here you are in a world of millions of people traveling across many quantum possibilities and you've got a mind and a heart that are capable of wonderful things. Despite the odds that you could have grown up a jaded, straight up dick of a person you've got this perspective that is so hopeful that you're actually disappointed in seeing the negativity of others. Don't focus on what's terrible about others, don't focus on what's 'wrong', though. These are perspective based issues. Focus on the positivity you have in your heart, the hope you have for the world and humanity. Focus on the strength of your own heart and mind and not the things you cannot control. What I think you're going through is the sort of issue that builds wisdom and strength in a person. We're in a world of many contrasting personalities and perspectives. The good, the bad, and the ugly, man. You can find a way to love it all and just let it go without becoming apathetic or so idealistic that you carry a 'cupcakes and gumdrops' perspective of the world. If you let it drag you down, though, your depression is going to take away your own positive potential and make it stagnate or negative. You'll basically become this jaded, miserable person that begins to spread negativity, their self. Try to take a moment to learn from this. Okay, some people do things that just suck. They say things that are terrible. We live in a world where we are all influencing one another and there is no 'good' without the 'bad'. Love it all, man. Accept the world, and develop a confidence in the sort of chaos we're living in :-)

I suppose the truth hurts, and the world can be hard to live in after all.
When you were a child you may have had these beliefs that it will be all rosy and wonderful to be an adult. But sadly many issues exist.

Is it normal, generally speaks of awkward and personal issues that you may not have even heard of before. I feel it may be best for only people of maturity to read and reply. The original question can of course be asked by anyone.

If it is affecting you adversely by reading some of these horror stories then don't read them!

  • I love these posts people make...it's as if they actually think they're smarter than everyone else...which is kind of dumb really. Smart people say and do stupid and ignorant things all the time.

I sure agree with you. Everybody does stupid things; even the SMART/INTELLIGENT ones.

I do stupid stuff all the time. I don't think I dumb but neither am I the smartest and most intelligent person around.

But we are human; of course we will think we are better than someone some point in our lives.

Nobody is perfect; perfection doesn't exist even though we try to be.

OP just don't read through it if it makes you depressed. You are on a website that called "Is It Normal", so of course there will be a lot of questions in our mind that we think is odd or non-intelligent. There are also quite a few insecure people on here.

      • It's so true though, the most successful serial killer in the states kills 48 women, evades capture for over 20 years...turns out he's got an IQ of 84...but hears the catch, he's doing really smart things like leaving other peoples cigarette butts at crime scenes. I think it shows that smart people can be dumb and dumb people can be smart, i see it all the time.

Exactly. And so far everyone is agreeing with the OP, so I guess everybody is above-average in intelligence! We are all ignorant in our own unique ways.

      • If everyone thinks everyone else is dumb then who's smart enough to know that they can't be as dumb as the people who think they're smart bwahahahaha.
