Old roommate who's in the same college course as me made me feel bad

This guy is subtly a dick, will generally try to undermine me. Today after having moved out from the house we were staying in and having barely kept in contact we were on a lecture online and he sent me an insulting snap.
I can't tell if he means it as a joke or subtly trying to undermine me, I just didnt answer because I don't like him but I guess it got me to overthink what if next year I won't be able to escape him and he'll be in my classes and I'll have to deal with his bullying. Do I just make a scene and punch him in the face if he says an undermining "joke" again like I don't want to get a bad reputation for being hot headed but i don't wanna take any shit it's just so subtle that I cant tell if it is shit or not.
My gut reaction is that yes hes trying to undermine me but I can't prove that to anyone else so if I do fight him it might look unjustified

    If you don't want to make a scene, send him something similar so that he knows you aren't the type to be bullied before he gets used to it.

    It would be something else if you guys were still room mates, but since you don't have to meet him any more you should just ignore him. People are more fragile/ insecure than you think. If you stop responding to him he will soon lose interest and leave you alone.

    Ignore him and cut all contact with him. Even if he’s in your classes you can just sit far away from him and not talk to him.

    I would ignore stuff like this. When face to face with him, if he behaves like a dick towards you, calmly say "just fuck off xxxx" and then walk away. This will embarrass him.
