Obama does not need congress to raise the debt celing, should he?

It is in the constitution, something about the president has powers granted to him by the constitution to act alone, without congressional approval (or negotiations) to use his executive powers to stop the country from going into debt!...I do not understand why he does not act on it???

use his executive powers to raise the debt ceiling 6

Obama is actually surprisingly conservative. But no matter what all the republicans will see is a democrat. Negotiating with them will never work. And there are so many people against raising the debt ceiling. He probably doesn't want to do something big before the 2012 election.

I'm unsure what your president has but my opinion is that though if he has the power to do such a thing - it would be political suicide.

  • It was a provision in the 14th ammendment, basically, for the sake of rendering confederate money useless (yes that is almost as big of an oversimplification as calling all Republicans greedy Neanderthals). Since, as of yet, and much to the distain of both Bush and Obama administrations, the U.S. still is not a monarchy...two other branches of government can, and most likely would, render such an abuse of power null and void. Even in the unlikely event that such a move survived the Supreme Court, a move so disgusting would guarantee a return of absolute power and control to Republicans next election. Which worked so well last time? Going against the wishes of 2/3 of the U.S. population with Obamacare dethroned Democrats from the house...would you really like to see the Senate and White House handed back to your "greedy Neanderthals?" I wouldn't either.

An extension would have been easy...give time and let debate and common sense work..they're close..

Let checks and ballances do their job.

He needs to swallow his pride, take his lumps and actually negotiate.
Using executive powers to raise the debt ceiling will prove he is nothing but a tool. An ignorant tool who has never read the US Costitution, doesn't understand it and doesn't care and hopefully it will become his political "Waterloo."
