Normal to hate all customers?

as soon as someone becomes a customer at the store i work in i immediately hate them! i try hard not to be outwardly rude, because then i'd get fired, but its hard because they're all so stupid and annoying!
is this normal? or should i just go work somewhere where i dont have to talk to people?

If you are in a customer service field you are going to get to a point where you become resentful of the customers. One thing that might help is if you imagine them as giant dollar signs. So when someone is walking into a store imagine it's a giant foam dollar sign walking into the store.

Find a job you like, but also you might want to work with a therapist to understand what all that anger is about. Because it seems you deflecting it onto people who can't hurt you. And there is no job where you do not work with people. Even working with animals, babies, coma patients all have difficult advocates, or caregivers. Good luck.

Quit now and do yourself and the customers a favor. If you don't like them it probably shows a least some times and they don't deserve that.

  • Absolutely, get a job where you don't have to work with the public as much!
Trust me on this one; you will have a better life overall, if you make a career change.

I've had those kind of jobs too and looking back, I wish I had just quit them, they weren't worth the pay or my time.

As a waitress, I completely understand your dilema. To everyone out there, ppl at restaurants, fast food, retail, strippers and service industry jobs period dont want to deal with your shit.

  • Agreed. And I don't get the point in letting a customer stand there and talk to you. It's like get your shit and move on. Especially when the ones are women and the employee is a man who is taken.

I used to work in food service. My mantra was "hungry people are at their most selfish" and I hated it. I chose my next job on the basis that I wouldn't have to deal with customer. I feel so much better now.

If you're in a job were you have to deal with clients and customers all the time. You either like people or go mad.

I'm a client service manager and I have a little bit of both. Not all customers are bastards out to give you hard time, some of them are lovely. They're like shots of Sambuca, best taken one at a time.

I was the same when I worked with the public. I would have a surge of hatred for everyone. Now I work in a creative job and love it. Change job!

You sound exactly like me. I have worked with the public in fast food and retail and I hated the customers(even the nice ones). I think its the idea of serving them that I dont like. At this moment I am a stay at home mom of 2 and I am so much happier not having to deal with people. When I do go back to work I plan to work somewhere without customers breathing down my back all the time.

i agree. working with the public is rough. look for another type of job where you don't have to deal with them.

believe me, you're normal.. working with the public is a daunting, and very unrewarding task. hating every single person that walks thru the door just goes with the territory.
