Non-vegans act so weird around me

My non-vegan relatives always make fun of me for being a vegan. Sometimes I am like "I'm hungry. What should I eat?" and a relative is like "an animal". wtf. my family is always offering me non-vegan food. when i tell them the reason I dont eat animal products, they get mad at me. they also blame all my health problems on my veganism. if i get dizzy (which happens when I dont drink enough water, and ONLY when I dont drink enough water), they say its because I am a vegan. if i have a headache, they say its because i am a vegan. once my grandma offered me a snack and i was like "i dont want to eat that. there is chicken." and she was like "so what? chicken is good. the body needs chicken." once i said i love animals and my uncle was like "i love animals too. they are so tasty." ok, ew. oh and by the way, my family thinks I am malnourished from being a vegan and that i am going to die from anemia. even though i got a blood test and the doctor found NO deficiencies, and my mom (who is not a vegan) is actually anemic.

is it normal or is my family full of lunatics

Well, thanks to your family's obnoxious behavior regarding your veganism you know exactly how not to treat other people who just happen to be non vegans. Nobody likes to be teased or preached at so keep that in mind and you will be a credit to vegans everywhere.

Gays and Vegans think everyone needs to know their personal business.

You are just jealous because of the attention these people get...if people were accepting different people as they are ..then these different people won't keep speaking about their diversity in an attempt to get their rights to be acceptable. I bet you hate vegans and gays for other reasons not just because of the attention they get. I'm not a homosexual nor a vegetarian or vegan but I know what does it mean to be different in a world filled with ignoramuses like you

The truth, from a biological standpoint, is that veganism is not natural for humans. Can veganism be healthy? Yes, if done properly. Is it normal for omnivorous humans to find it strange/unhealthy/deviant? Yes. Does family, in general, like to tease those who deviate from the perceived norm? Yep...

I've never known a vegan to not prosthelytize about veganism. Not a single one. I'd place bets that you, Anon, are no exception. I'd suggest that you provide for your own sustenance, knowing best your nutritional requirements, and save the lessons on veganism for those who are interested. Do these two things, and the incidences of your family reacting teasingly to your choice will lessen (though probably never go away entirely).

And when they do tease, don't react. Eventually, maybe, they'll get bored and move on.

Ah yes, nothing like a big chunk of tofu made from GMO beans and fried in GMO bean oil.
I think I'll go eat something healthy like a rat or a cow or whatever.
All you vegans out there, I'll eat extra animals just to make up for the ones you don't eat.

Yes, there are some things wrong with beans. Every food has something wrong with it.

What's wrong with a carrot? You can trust a carrot.

        • You have to be careful with carrots. Its pretty easy to get too much Vitamin A when you are eating a carrot.

By the way I still eat carrots.

Chronic toxicity - if the vit A builds up ovet a long period of time. It can cause bone pain and changes to the skin (turn orangeish if I recall correctly). Long term, it can cause liver damage and pressure on the brain.

            • there are many side effects. At some point I had too much vitamin A and got a really bad headache. seriously it lasted like 12 hours. but it might have been from something else.

          I agree.
I never met a carrot that wasn't trustworthy.
Other vegetables should strive to be more carrot-like.

If you want to eat rabbit food, then carry on, but don't keep telling me and everyone else about how wonderful you are because of it.
Humans are omnivorous. That means we are designed to eat anything. Anything includes meat.

I am a fellow omnivore but do you really think humans are designed to eat meat? No we allowed ourselves to do it through higher thinking. A wolf was designed to eat meat. They can bite something to death and eat it raw. For a human to eat meat, you have to kill it, skin it, drain the blood, clean it, cut it up with tools, cook it to make it tender, cut it up with smaller tools and then eat it. You're a funny guy and I normally agree with you but not this time.

Actually, from what I have read, humans were scavengers and scavenged carcasses from the predatory kills of lion, hyenas, etc.
We would throw rocks and fire sticks at the owners of the carcass to scare them away or just wait 'till they had finished eating their fill and sneak in and grab a chunk for ourselves.
Once we discovered BBQ, there was no stopping us.

Your body may not need it but mine does.
Humans starting eating meat shortly after they descended from the trees and maybe before that. Chimps eat meat and they are our closet living relative.
I won't live and don't want to live without meat.
Good luck trying to stay healthy being a vegan.

Because I eat meat do I not ensure the survival of these animals? We will continue to breed them as we continue to eat them and how can you not understand it's completely natural for humans to eat every fucking thing on this delicious planet.

Vegans are actually more destructive to the animals you hold so dearly to your hearts.

One of my four sisters is vegan who think of herself better than others BUT the truth might be opposite. We have limited earth and if we do not eat or keep animal population in check, humans will be in danger because reproduction rate of animals is much higher than humans. Likewise among others species one keeps the other in check like cat eating rat.

Most vegans I know are more than a little crazy. I knew one English vegan who refused to take heart medication because they were tested on animals - 15 years ago when they were first being developed! Another will launch into full on preacher mode if you so much as wear leather shoes around her.

That being said, there are some (including one who is a regular on this site) who are decent, respectful, well informed individuals who will keep their vegan views to themselves unless asked, and can partake in a sensible debate without immediately accusing all and sundry of being animal torturing barbarians.

Depending on which end of the spectrum the OP is, her family is either being a bunch of morons, or having a shot at the annoying twit that gives them the shits with her weird dietary / clothing / etc requirements.

    Serious question.

I have always been confused about why vegans don't eat eggs.

I may not agree with the reasons for being vegan but I don't have to its your choice, as long as you don't try to take away my bacon we're cool.
I just want to know why no eggs? If the reason is to be kind to animals I get the no meat thing, I sorta get no milk but I don't understand the no eggs. Chickens will lay them no matter what, and if they are unfertilized they will never become baby chicks so why don't vegans eat them? This has been something that's always confused me, can you explain?

Because chickens are treated poorly in order for us to have the eggs? Even organic, free range eggs require exploitation of the animal to a point that some aren't comfortable with.

I'm not 100% sure if chickens are in the list of animals we have modified for our benefit, to the animals detriment, but many are.

Why won't vegans wear wool? It doesn't require that the animal die. But. Sheep in their natural state would not grow wool so excessively. We have bred them to grow so much wool that they NEED to be shorn for their own health.

I'm not OP or vegan, btw.

"No matter what you eat, animals die to enable it to happen. If you're going to eat a vegetarian diet, monocultures have been established at the expense of our naturally bio-diverse environments. Land has been swept clean for vegans too.

Take the example of what happens when you grow grains or pulses. In all the towns around Australia that are wheat producing towns or centres, on average about every five years they have a mouse plague.

And these mice get killed in the millions and millions, mass slaughtered in horrible ways that cause their deaths to be really unpleasant. And that is going into producing grains. Some of those grains are fed to cattle, but they are also the core of the diets for a lot of people who don't want to eat any meat.

So when you think about mice, and we are talking now here about sentient lives, is the vegetarian or vegan's claim that their diets involve less death of sentient beings correct or not?

When you actually do the sums you find, oh no, it's not clear at all that they are correct because all these mice, among other things, are being killed to make sure that we get those grains.

Now, what can we do about it? Maybe there are other diets we can eat?

I think we can just stop being hypocritical.

That's what I'm really asking for; just accept the fact that in order for us to survive, other animals are going to die. It has been the way of life in ecosystems long before humans were on the planet. We can't change that, we can't stop death out there."

source: Professor Mike Archer, The Science Show

Professor Mike Archer is from the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of New South Wales.

Vegan diets causing less deaths to sentient beings is actually a myth, sorry.

Aaaaaand that's why if you want meat you should have to go out in to the woods and shoot an animal, you allow it to die wild and free as it should be, not to mention it'll be better for you. The creature wouldn't have been cooped up and stuffing it's face with growth hormones.

No mice killed or other intruding animals nor does it harm the planet, only the animal you plan on eating, and at least then you can make the food chain argument.

Don't lie, killing it is part of the fun too! ^-^

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • I accept that, but I have other reasons to avoid animal products that arent about animal cruelty. I think that it's more natural for me to be a vegan. I only feel healthy when I am on a vegan diet, and I am naturally repulsed by animal products. The only animal product that doesnt gross me out is dairy. But I am allergic to dairy.
