I agree.. I clicked on this post simply to share how upset I was to be excluded before I even knew what the question was.

There are quite a few celebrities people don't know were born in the UK like Slash, Christian Bale, Guy Pearce, Orlando Bloom, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman and the scientist Stephen Hawking.

Biggest British celebrities INSIDE Britain currently (for better or for worse):

    The Queen
    J.K. Rowling
    Stephen Fry
    Simon Cowell
    Adele
    David Tennant
    One Direction
    Daniel Craig
    Daniel Radcliffe
    Ant and Dec
    Russell Brand
    Robert Pattinson

This is just based on ubiquity and fame, not talent. It's also based on how big they are 'right now'. There are loads of famous people in the past recognisable the world over (The Beatles, Churchill, Pink Floyd etc.).

      Jonathan Ross
      Chris Evans
      Victoria Beckham
      Cheryl Cole
      Other 'royals'
      Davina McCall
      ....and loads of sportspersons.

There's no way he is the most well known person inside Britain outside of the queen. Certainly not from my experience.

        • If you're under 20 maybe, but beyond that I'd say he's certainly up there. Most 40 year olds don't listen to One Direction for instance.

You mostly named people who are in the "current" mainstream, something half the people out there don't give a shit about. If you were to poll EVERY British person, he'd be right beneath the queen or darn close.

I named who I think are the biggest celebrities in our country right now, and by biggest I mean most widely publicised, most active, most talked about. Because that is what the question asks for. It makes sense that those who are in the "current mainstream" are the biggest celebrities at the moment. Even if "half the people out there don't give a shit" about them, they will probably talk about these celebs, hear about them and see them frequently (whether they want to or not). Most 40 year olds might not listen to One Direction, but they'll probably have heard of them.

I wouldn't say Morrisey is more widely recognised than Chris Martin, Liam Gallagher, Robbie Williams, Bono, Elton John or David Bowie. Plenty of people I know, young and old, wouldn't be able to pick Morrisey's face out of a line-up, but would recognised Robbie Williams in an instant.

This is nothing about taste or preferences by the way. As we both know, popularity and ubiquity doesn't always indicate quality. I was trying to be as objective as possible, rather than list famous people I like.

Your famous people of the past Churchill, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc. were way better than today, One Direction, Russell Brand, Robert Pattinson. Of course it is the same here.

True, but most of the famous people of today will be distant memories in 40 years, but the few who have made the greatest impact will remain in public consciousness as the 'Beatles' and 'Churchills' of now.

Well that was a list of the biggest British celebs today.

But I omitted a lot of actors and musicians that are likely to remain in people's minds for a long time and have cross-generational appeal.

I guess as Brits go: Damien Hirst, Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Daniel Day Lewis, Judie Dench, Stephen Fry, Sam Mendez, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Oasis, Thatcher, Ricky Gervais. They'll probably be remembered in 40 years time.

Probably someone like Simon Cowell.:/ Although, I've never met anyone who doesn't love, or at least like, Stephen Fry or David Attenborough. They're sort of National Treasures.:P The Beatles are very famous as well.

Edit: Crap! I forgot the Queen! Does she count?

I'd have put David Beckham as the undisputed most famous Briton, honestly. I'm actually really surprised nobody has mentioned him.

Other famous Brits in Britain *right now* are Simon Cowell (most famous annoying TV personality), Michael McIntyre (most famous stand-up comedian), David Cameron (most famous living politician, although now I think about it Tony Blair might be more famous), Paul McCartney and (most famous musician), Katie Price (most famous model/tabloid fodder), Daniel Radcliffe (most famous actor), Andy Murray (most famous sportsperson who isn't a footballer), J.K. Rowling (most famous writer) and more. Honourable mentions to Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, Brain May and dozens of popstars and Olympians.

I don't think there are any internationally famous Swiss people who didn't die a long time ago.

Maybe Bruno Ganz a Swiss actor who usually plays Germans (like Hitler)

And if you like Tennis you may know Roger Federer.

I know. He was born in New Zealand, lived there for 4 years, spent the rest of his childhood and most of his life in Australia. He's more of an Australian than a New Zealander. For one thing, he acquired Australian citizenship in 2006. So identifies as an Aussie.

I'd say that makes Eveyana correct to include Russell Crowe as an Australian celeb.

Russell Crowe is proud of his heritage as a new Zealand born actor. To call him Australian is of disrespect to him and quite naive. But its very common for people to have Thr viewpoint you have, adopting him as Australian. It's such a minor thing let's not argue it further and just agree to disagree. You're sweet to stick up for your friend but if they had issue with it they would discuss it with me them self.

That's ok :) It's a common misconception. Australia claims alot of New Zealand born celebrities as their own, because many leave New Zealand and come to Australia in the pursuit of their careers.
