Nobody listens to techno? why?!

Over the past few years, I've been getting more and more into electronic and techno music, even going to a few raves.
Yet, out of the 10,000+ people I know, only about 4 or 5 like it. And I've got just one question...WHY?!
All of today's music is either:
Rap that has little or no sense what so ever in it's lyrics and a crappy beat.
R&B, which is okay, but I don't choose to listen to it.
Rock, also good.
And...ugh, pop music. (Britanny is such a...well, I'd better not say that.)

I know it's supposed to be popular in Europe, but nobody I know likes it here in America! And I know for a FACT, that when they say they've heard it and don't like it, they're lying, because they don't know the variety of techno. Never have I heard a song that sounds like another.

So do I have a point, or am I just a music nazi? All I want is to have some fun at a casual party while we all dance to some Happy Hardcore mixes. But nobody even knows what Happy Hardcore is...

  • People do not like it because they want to listen to music that has some stupid image and lifestyle associated with it, like rap and most metal, etc. Techno is just plain 'ol awesome.

Here's an idea: Why don't you listen to the kind of music you like, and let everyone else do the same. Not every issue needs to be a casue.

I am an 18 year old male living and the states and I THRIVE off techno. I honestly could not get through the day with out it. Specifically my favorite sub-genres are trance, house, and electro. I like some hard trance and hard style. I suppose the reason why no one in the US seems to appreciate techno is that America is just a different culture of people. Europe is where techno was founded and where it took off, people of my generation in Europe have grown up with it so naturally they all take a liking to it just like everyone in the states of my generation grew up with rap and alternative rock so they all appreciate it rap and alt. rock. (Generalizing, not necessarily fact.) Those who take a liking to techno in the states are probably introduced it by a friend and they just took a liking to it based on personal preference. Techno probably would become much more mainstream if every major city started a techno radio station and it broadcasted on a regular basis, but unless that happens always expect it to be somewhat of a cult genre here in the United States. Unfortunate I know...

The reason why you enjoy it is you are becoming more appreciative of the structure of sound. You will get your typical responses of "it all sounds the same" "its boring" etc.... but these people live in their own musical bore...

When one thinks of music to its purest form "Classical/Experimental" music is what comes to mind. The closest form of "Classical" music in modern times is "Electronic Music" which encompass different genres "trance""ambient"etc.

Why? because of the structure of sound, the layering is to take you on a journey. Ie. Trance music is cut into sections which the listener can interpret a story in their own way and take them on a trance trip....All without the requirement of vocals.... Music is based on sound not only on singing.....

    Doof Doof Doof Doof.....

I'm told that listening to trance makes me gay. And while I've largely moved on from that, I disagree. I appreciate the entire spectrum of electronic music.

People who can't dance don't like techno.

I grew up on Techno, Trance, Freestyle, Dance, House, Electro, Industrial, Rave, Dubstep, and Hardstyle :) It's all I listen to since I was 7.

Some of my favorites are Daft Punk, Tiesto, Ferry Corsten, Van Burren, ATB, Stevie B, Kaskade, KMFDM, Benny Benassi, etc

Without music like this, I think I would literally die.

Trance and House are amazing. Van Burren, Tiesto, PVD, Schiller, Infected Mushroom are some of my favorites.

Oh and by the way, I'm originally a metalheadand And this is the only type of music that I love listening to apart from Metal.

Rap and Pop can lick my balls.

Ah happy hardcore thats the shit, I must say i'm from Europe, Scotland in fact and We still love this stuff although no has called it techno since the 1994 to be honest.

It has so many different types of styles it's unbelievable, like my favorite type at the moment would be hard/electro/trance.

But yeh Happy hardcore we still love you.

Nothing's wrong with techno. I like to listen to it sometimes too. It's just that most people who don't like it either A) don't listen to good techno B) don't pay enough attention to hear the difference, or C) just don't like it in general.
    It's just taste...

    Because techno SUCKS!
It's not even music. It's just repetitive noise!
Even in the eighteenth century there was better music!Where's the complexity?Where's the art?Put a couple of sticks in a child's hands and a trash can in the other one's hands, and with some burps and farts they can make up an equally complex melody.Mozart could compose more complex melodies on the spot with an harpischord at age seven.

Haven't you seen that family guy where they're making fun of dubstep? The guy is all, "what key are we in?" And the other Swedish guy is all "naaahhh nah nah- none of that now-" lol because it's garbage any idiot with a computer and enough time can make.

Im well into all types of electronic dance, techno, minimal, hardcore techno, gabber, breakcore, dark dnb and dubstep, trance and psy. Im in the UK and even though there is a techno scene in some areas, there aint that many people who like it (nobody in my workplace does). People who say its boring and repetitive just dont know how to(or dont want to) listen. Shame as its such an original sound which pushes the boundaries of whats possible with todays technology. Listen to 'The DJ Producer' and catch my drift ;)

I think you have to be on a different level to truly appreciate and love techno music. My favorite is trance and house! I also think the EDM music today isn't as good as the old skool 90's rave techno. Most everyone loved techno back in those days when it was new when raves first started. It's always been my favorite genre of music and when everyone else stopped listening and all of a sudden it was "uncool"-- I could have cared less!! I kept listening and will still be listening to it when I'm 80 yrs old!! Growing up in America, you don't have much of a choice especially since I grew up in the south with classic rock on every station-ugh!! Rap and hip hop were the closest to techno for me because it actually had BASS AND A BEAT to it! I have thought there must be something wrong with me for liking techno so much but I've always been different so it makes sense. I literally go into a trance when I listen to my favorite techno songs (keoki, Benny Benassi), It takes me to a higher level of consciousness-- even drug free! Most people are not even aware and don't have the ability to go to that place in their mind/body/soul. You either feel it or you DON'T. Perhaps I would have fit in better somewhere outside of America... lol

About a year ago I was studying for a bio exam...took a break..started listening to classical music on YouTube..and somehow I ended up k listening to a Vivaldi four seasons techno remix. my first techno piece. What an experience that was. The music took me to a different place. the music had constant improvised patterns it was awesome

I have a good collection of techno music in my ipod it's good workout music. I listen to house music hard house jumpstyle and tecktonik...in fact earlier I was listening to ian pooley s daft pink remix of "chord memory" and rollerskate disco :-) yeahh

I listen to a variety of music, but lately I've been listening to things in the electronic family. There's something so different and magical about it and I'm honestly starting to tire of most music. I like groups like Daft Punk, Enigma, Bjork, etc.

I actually support it not being popular here in the US. Things become terrible when theyre mainstream. Just an example, I could easily go on iTunes (which is probably what most of the country uses for buying music) and find some really awesome EDM for $0.99. Then when it becomes mainstream, bam it's $1.29. And the way things go with most mainstream things is stupid too.
Just a little message from a member of the EDM community.

I am doing a paper for my college english class about this very topic! i am originally from New York but now i live in the midwest, also i am European- croatian go there every year, so i am exposed to techno music and i love it! Every day i listen to it and it makes me feel great! but i am also confused on why people i know do not like it. in the mid-west our night clubs are lame, they play stuff like taylor swift and old songs, not any real stuff like techno or house music. in big cities like new york they have all the house night clubs and dance/techno radio stations. i love techno! i try to recruit my friends to listen to it, and most of the time the songs i show them they like it. which is funny because before i show them the songs they say "nobody listens to techno" or "techno sucks" but they ironically like it!

Just let plain definition do the thinking for you. Techno is techno. Music, is music. Whatever you can think of, it is only itself, and it's really irritating to think anything else about it.

Nothing is "better" than anything else at ANY given time. Get over it, like Jim_Pfoss said, enjoy whatever you want, and everyone has a right to that.

If you are curious, I find techno to not be actual "music", but if you enjoy having your brain get raped by repetitive computer generated beats, that's your deal. Not mine.
