Need help with a job offer situation

Alright, so I've never had a job before and have been searching for a job now for quite a while and finally got a potential (it's not set in stone yet) job offer at a fast food place (let's call it 'S'). I have orientation this Saturday, but then today (Thursday) I get a call from another fast food place (P) that I applied at around the same time I did at S - actually before I think.

I wasn't able to answer the phone right away so they left a voice mail asking about scheduling an interview. I called back and they scheduled an interview for Monday. I thought it would be best not to mention the job offer/orientation at S so I didn't say anything.

But now I'm worried that if I get the job at S - they didn't clarify if I was hired, they just told me to come to orientation - that I might also get an offer from P. I would be fine with working two jobs; I originally considered it to make up for the time (and money) I went without a job. But I don't know how to go about negotiating the schedules and telling S about P if I do get an offer. I don't want them to drop me because of it, since I might fail the interview at P.

Also when I started sending out applications I was really hoping for P in the first place since I thought it would be an easier work environment, but I wouldn't want to stand up S just because of that since they gave me my very first job offer and I really appreciate that. Help :/

*Personally I was thinking about not saying anything about the interview at orientation and just asking P after the interview if they would willing to work around my schedule at S, and THEN mention that I had an interview at another place to S and if they would be willing to juggle my schedule. But I'm not sure if that's the best idea so yeah. I apologize if this is confusing, I'm not sure if I wrote it the best way. I've never had to deal with this before and it's freaking me out. Google wasn't much help haha.

Don't say anything to S yet but mention it at P interview 0
Mention interview at S orientation, then tell P about job at S 0
Don't say anything to either company until you have it figured all out 1
Tell P that I just got hired at S and can no longer accept offer?? 0
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I have heard that some companies frown upon people working 2 jobs, but don't know what types of companies or what % are like that. I would guess that fast food places wouldn't have a problem with people working second jobs though. Cause I've heard people say "my second job is at X fast food place."

What you can do is go to Salami House, get your schedule and let them know you'd appreciate a static schedule that doesn't change around much because you have ***. Later when you go to Potato Paradise, you can tell them the same. Just make sure not to give both places the same schedule availability =P

*** can be anything. Another job or college classes. This is upto you. I don't like the idea of telling either place that you have a separate interview. If I were an interviewer that may rub me the wrong way *shrugs* Maybe that's just me. I'd rather say I have another job or have classes.

Two things I feel you should know. 1) Be assertive. I'm not saying be ungrateful or a demanding dick but saying "I have ***, and so I would really appreciate it if I could have a constant schedule so it doesn't interfere with ***" is much better than "would you be willing to juggle my schedule?" 2) Even if you did get a job at S first, and then later P, and preferred P and decided to turn S down. It's OK. Don't feel guilty. Companies aren't offended by sentiments. For them it's just a process and they'll have another new-hire in no time.

Why do you think you'll fail the interview at P?

      • Okay, I'll probably just say that then. But there is one thing though; I already told S that I would be available to work anytime and that my schedule is really flexible. That was back when they first interviewed me though, so could I just say that things changed/something came up without mentioning the interview at P? Since at P I could just tell them what you put in the 2nd paragraph and that'd probably be okay.

Well, not necessarily fail I guess. More like a 50/50 chance that I could. I've only had 4 interviews so far; 2 each at different places so I'm still not the best when it comes to answering questions ahah.

Hmm. Since you've already told them your schedule is flexible, I feel it's a judgement call from here. Personally I wouldn't say anything just cause it's the safer route, but depending on how your interview went, or your rapport with the interviewer/employer at S, you could still tell them about your P job and request them to work with you on your schedule. It's all the same. If I were in your shoes I'd let it be, wait to get whatever schedule from S, and then work the P job around it. But this is probably something to think about after your P interview

As for answering questions, psht, you seem pretty eloquent on here! Seems like it's just a matter of time before you realize you're a beast at interviews and answering questions. Best of luck for Saturday!

          • The manager at S was pretty friendly at the interview and said she doesn't like to yell and all that, so I couldn't see her having a fit about it. But I think I will just hold off and work P's schedule around it.

I do admit I wasn't prepared at all for the first place I interviewed that so that didn't help lol. Thanks for the advice and all :)
