Naming your children is wrong!

I think it's wrong to name your child at birth! Forcing your child to take on a name that they'll eventually hate in life is completely immoral! I think you should let your child grow to where they're able to speak for themselves so THEY can pick their OWN name!

It's disgraceful that we do this! I just think it's wrong!

Is it normal I feel like this!?

We all deserve names to distinguish ourselves from everyone else, to help aid communication and identification. Being without a name is a burden - even if it's only until you're able to speak. Even after that, who's to say you will pick a name at the age of 4 you won't grow to hate?

Our parents are in the best position to bestow a name to us; they understand the culture and the language of the society we're born into far better than we do.

If we wish to change our name later on because we've 'grown to hate it', most countries legally allow it, either with the permission of the parents or without (dependent on age).

I think you're taking issue with something pretty minor in the grand scheme of things. I certainly don't think this is a moral issue.

Would it be better if I named you now?

From now on you are "Aluicious Zimmerplauts"

How else would we refer to one another? Who is more qualified to give us our name? At birth we cannot yet speak.

What do you call them if they have no name?

Children need names it's part of developing, they have to have a sense of understanding who they are. They play out roles as other people and call themselves different names but then they have their own name and their real identity, when they're no playing games to fall back on.

Could you imagine not knowing who you are, or what you are? As a child I imagine it would be quite confusing and slightly dehumanizing. We give lions the label of lions and we don't take notice of one lions differences to another. That would be the same with children, we would just refer to them as children not taking notice of their distinct personalities because they all would share the same name, child.

Do you know who Picabo Street is?

And I have a feeling "boob" would quickly become the most common name.

    Brilliant idea.

Could be... But what would you call them when they're nameless? And what would the other children call each other?

How are we suppose to distinguish people if they do not have names? If we do not use names we have to distinguish them some other way. Like skin color, or clothes, or hair or (Are they goth, nerd, jock). Also what about people with speech impediments?

I partially agree with you. I don't think it's wrong to name your child at birth but everyone should be able to choose their own name, and be able to change it as often as they want.

If kids could pick their own names, there'd be way too many Brads, Britneys and Justins around. What gives you the idea that children have enough smarts to do anything but choose a popular, common name?
If you hate your name as an adult, you can walk into any city hall in the nation and change it for a few bucks (UK, too). What's so fucking hard about that? Get a grip.

My mom named me, and on my 13th birthday said I could pick a new one, legally.

They can always legally change it when they get older. How many babies can name themselves? How many young children are capable of making a good decision on naming themselves? This is not to say that all adults are intelligent and responsible enough to do the same. There are many adults which have bestowed names that are truly godawful upon their offspring. Legally speaking, I think parents have to name the child something. Given them a name is like giving them an ID. Let's say that they get lost, having information on what their name is can help people to find them and so on.

People can change their names later on in their lives anyways, I'm pretty sure. I could understand if the parent names their child "Lol" and the kid hates their name. It's not a very good name anyways, and I certainly wouldn't want it. I like my name though, as it's rare and has a good meaning and history to it.

Yeah let everybody just be John Doe and Jane Doe till they're 18 Lmao.

You do know you can legally change your name right? People already have the right to pick their own name if they don't like their birth name. Personally, I wouldn't go through the trouble, because it's just not that important to me. It's just a name.
