My signature doesn't match my names at all!

My name starts with the letter "M" and my initials are "M. L.", but in my signature I use made-up letters like "K. M." for example. Is that uncommon? I just don't like the letters of my name, but I don't want to bother changing my name legally. I don't write my whole names in my signature, just K, M and some scribbles.

Your signature can be whatever you want to be. The only thing that is important is if it doesn't read a different name (different letters are fine) and it looks consistent each time you right it.

Your initials are ML, pretend it stands for Melinda Lane. There's nothing wrong with writing LL, standing for Lindy Lane. So anybody who accepts your signature doesn't know if you prefer the name Kat (because your middle name is Cathy) or if your last name is maiden because you are married.

Long story short, as long as you can reproduce it to claim what is yours, there's nothing that says it has to be your initials.

My signature looks like an epileptic spider accidentally stood in spilled ink and then walked across the page. And you know what, Ime going to do what you do, just make up initials, great idea! That'll keep 'em guessing.

My signature often looks like a bunch of connected loops with a sharp jagged ending. And I often cross the T on the wrong scribble- eh- whatever.

  • Using a fake name is illegal. If they catch you, they'll send you up the river!

It's my understanding that using an alias is illegal only if you do it for illegal purposes, like to commit fraud, or some other crime. A person's signature is totally personal and you can write your name anyway you want as long as you are consistent so that it's recognizable as your signature. Your signature is sort of like a password. If your name is Joe Black and you scribble out something that looks like Greg Slimbo it's still your signature as long as you do it the same every time so that it's recognizable as yours. I was told this by a loan officer when I bought my house decades ago. My legal name is 6 syllables plus a Jr and I told the loan officer I get tired of writing that much on documents. He told me I can sign my name any way I want and I've been using only 3 syllables without the Jr ever since.

What you are doing is inadvertently illegal. You can save yourself from a lot of trouble of you go and your name changed legally.

Probably your initials aren't even M.L.
