My nephew killed his pet

My 3 year old nephew threw the family's cat off the landing and the cat died. The family was kind of shocked...is it normal that such a young kid killed a pet? Did he know what he was doing or was it accidental? I find it worrysome that he might hurt something else if he did this at a young age. Nobody else I know killed a pet when they were small. Its one thing to accidentally run over a pet with a car, but he threw it from a height.

No... I would keep a close eye on him.
this is a sign of a psychopath... now dont get all scared. This just means he may need therapy.
I would keep a close watch on him until he gets a little older. If he is still showing alarming signs I would get him professional help.

Most serial killers started out killing animals as toddlers and young kids.
Not all psychopaths are serial killers but all serial killers are psychopaths.

Kids of that age would not understand the consequences. How would a 3 year old know a cat can't jump off a landing or be thrown out of an aeroplane and survive?

When I was a boy my pet rabbit bit and scratched me. I got angry. Poor rabbit. I should have known better. But that's another story.

Three year olds don't understand death or even pain, unless it's their own. You need to teach him empathy, it seems he's a little slow learning it.

This sounds like one of those defective models and it should be recalled and destroyed. This kind of child cannot be rehabilitated nor corrected; it is just missing something basic in it's make up that separates it from civilized behavior. It must be destroyed immediately, to save the lives of many others some time in the future!
If it is not, I expect we will be hearing of some mass murder somewhere, or of the police finding dozens of bodies buried in his back yard.

He probably expected it to land without injury, cats are good at that after all. Honestly, unless you're leaving out that this was on the 4th floor or something I would have expected the same thing myself (not that I would try to test it).

Actually cats often get less injured from higher falls, something about they need so much to land properly.
      I'm a crazy cat lady.
