My mother secretly smokes.

My mom doesn't think I know she's smoking. Whenever she goes out she comes back smelling like smoke. Every time she comes home from work she immediately goes to take a shower. We've even found her cigarette packs. I talked to her about this and she doubted it. I really wish I could talk to her and state the obvious, but Every time I try I get too scared to hurt her or the family. I don't know what to do and my brother and I both know it.

I should talk to her 17
I shouldn't talk to her 1

If she's against you or your brother smoking, I'd make it look like you are smoking. If she jumps you about it you can simply act like it's not a big deal cause she does it to. The guilt trip can be a powerful agent of change.

My mom used to 'secretly' chain smoke and drink. And thought nobody smelled it on her.She wasn't supposed to because of her heart and other health problems, but she was stubborn as hell and had kind of a hard life. Most awkward funniest moment ever was when we both snuck out to smoke at the same time after the shittiest thanksgiving ever.

Get a real problem, she's an adult and can make her own choices.

You are talking about ordinary cigarettes, right? If so, remember nicotine is highly addictive and harder to give up than other legal and illegal drugs.

Don't attack her about it, just let her know how you feel, which I assume is wishing she'd stop so she'll be around longer.

I'm basing that statement on many people I've known over the years who've told me it was the hardest drug to kick, harder than heroin or alcohol or speed and also on what addiction experts say.

Let her know your concerns, and if she agrees with your views she will stop; but more likely she will just know to be more secretive about it in the future.
You can offer your moral support if she'd like to quit, but that's about all. In the end it's her choice.

Yeah, wonderful past time that results in one out of two smokers dying of a smoking related disease

Liar. Most lung cancer patients are smokers, but most smokers never get lung cancer. Just propaganda from the cigarette haters.

I did not mention lung cancer, which has causes other than nicotine. How about emphysema? I have it from smoking for decades believing "it won't happen to me". Smoking also contributes to heart disease and bladder cancer, plus some other fatal conditions I can't remember right now.

The 1 in 2 figure is from national statistics, it's not just propaganda.

You're surely not suggesting smoking isn't dangerous?
