I never told her I wanted to do it, but she told me anyway cause someone she knew had a kid who kllled herself- she's gonna throw all my stuff away and not read any of my journals or notes to find out why I did it. I've been depressed but not to the point of wanting to dle.

She wants a functioning child, not an emo.

That’s a shitty thing for her to say. It makes it seem like she doesn’t care about you. Saying this to a depressed person could easily make it worse. Saying it to anyone is cruel.

When I was younger and would express sadness or whatever, people either laughed or said, "tough shit".

These god damn kids do not know what it means to be depressed.
They have never had to raise delinquent little assholes who make them look bad on a daily basis, never had neighbors threaten lawsuits or ass kickings over something their own kid has done.
They have never had to worry about how to pay bills, etc.

I say wait til one gets to the real world THEN see what it means to be depressed.

Anyone can be depressed. And they don’t have to even have a reason to feel have depression. Depression is not the same as sadness. Some things I do agree with you. Like kids don’t know what it’s like in the real world. But that’s not their fault. It’s the fault of parents and teachers that don’t teach real world issues. Depression is not something someone can control though and. It’s a problem of the brain not an external problem

People like you are the reason people don't take depression seriously. You don't have to have a "reason" to be depressed. It just happens to some people, and it's not your job to belittle them for how they feel.

One does not need a reason to be depressed but it helps.

My mother told me that if I killed myself she wouldn't take care of my cat, and that she would give him away.

I love my parents, but they do a great job of saying fucked up shit.

Many people, most actually, never plan for what will happen to their animals after they die, often putting a huge burden on family members who never wanted the pet to begin with.

      I wish more people would.

Basically they said they would only care for him if I didn't die of suicide. My cat is a great reason to keep living!

        • Tbh, I doubt they would actually dishonor your memory by abandoning something so important to you.

You'd already be dead, so there would be no point, unless they really didn't want or care about the cat.

Still, the risk would be enough for me too. I don't trust other people to take care of my pets, anyway.

Just because I may be having a shitty time of life doesn't mean my pets have to get screwed over. They're my responsibility.

            You are entirely spot on!

Maybe that was your mom's motivation. To keep you from attempting suicide if you thought your cat wouldn't be cared for.

Perhaps, but it's not the most loving form of discouraging suicide. My cat is my best pal, he's my reason to live.

Parents are human too, she probably didnt have a better idea to keep you from suicide and knew that would work. The ends (keeping you alive), for her, justified the means (abandoning a cat).

Sounds like she knows you pretty well so consider yourself fortunate.

My dad would just say go ahead and do it.

          • That’s what I was thinking.

  • I don't think it's normal, but I have an idea of why she said it.

It's harsh, and unhelpful to a depressed person, but she likely said it to discourage you from committing suicide.

Some people who commit suicide, or think about committing suicide know that when they die, people will finally take them seriously.

"A penny for my thoughts, oh no, I'll sell 'em for a dollar. They'll be worth so much more after I'm a goner... Funny when you're dead how people start listening" - from the song, "If I Die Young" by The Band Perry.

When I was planning to commit suicide, I wrote quite a long note. I wasn't accusing anyone, really, but it was full of things that my parents and others were too unapproachable to talk to about.

I felt that though they really never listened, and misunderstood me in life, my final words would hold enough weight for them to finally listen enough to understand who I truly was and what I thought.

Without that security or hope, I, and likely some others, would be more hesitant to commit suicide before talking to someone.

Your mother may be trying to force you into a position where if you wanted to say something, you'd have to say it in life.

You'd have to face her, and anyone else you would mean a note for, and maybe she thinks that would give her time to intervene.

Though, her threat doesn't hold as much weight as she'd like to think.

There would be ways to get your last thoughts out, even if she decided to destroy your journals and notes.

Though, if your mother's plan of action actually worked, it wouldn't be fair to anyone else who wanted to know why you did it.

Your life can't be that bad well hopefully not. At least you weren't like me, all of my childhood and teen years where the worst yrs of my life from 9 yrs old to 19 yrs old I was constantly beaten up, full on beatings by my dad (I was a fairy good child and teenager) I studied and achieved good grades also I worked and my Dad was still a scumbag also threatened to break my legs and held big scissors to my throat. My mum was always the one to wind him up and she would only tell him to stop beating me so students in my college wouldn't notice she would say "stop otherwise someone could call the police". They cared about their own ass more than how much psychological and physically pain they put me through. Eventually as I got to 18 or 19 yrs old I couldn't feel the punches no more I just froze. I've even protected my mom from getting hit and I pushed my Dad and took a beating for my mom! But she has never protected me ever. None of my family has, family is overrated and scum. Everyone thinks my parents are so lovely - _- they don't understand how life is living with them. I tried commiting suicide 3 times which failed, I self harmed a lot, I was very ill looking and skinny. Thank God I found the courage to run away at 19 yrs old and now I am 22, I'd never go back.

I doubt she would do that if you did commit suicide, it's just like a weird blackmail against you so you definitely won't commit suicide. Still though it's very strange.

Some people threaten suicide as a way to try to control others.
If people around them act like they do not care, then the person threatening such actions gets the message - You isn't controllin diddily dick around here.

If I were in a situation where someone staying with me was saying they were going to kill themselves, I would ask, "Alright, so wash my hands of responsibility, you are going to the peanut gallery, go ahead and pack your shit".
