My mom bitches about everything except taking me to the liquor store?

I'm a grown adult. I lost my license a while ago to a DUI. Sometimes I ask my mom to drive me to a couple places when she's nearby.

Now, imagine we've gone to the grocery store and maybe one other place....if I were to ask her to take me to the bank, she'd have a fit. But if I asked her to take me to the liquor store, even thought it's out of the way, she's completely fine with it and wouldn't say a word-even if she just took me there a few days ago. And believe me, this woman never stops bitching, judging or complaining...so I don't get it.

Is this normal?

I think she's OK with taking you to the liquor store because in her mind as long as you still drink you will still need her. When you run other errands she may see it as over coming the obstacle of the DUI and getting things back on track, and less use for her.

Genius. I wouldn't have thought of it this way on my own but it's pretty spot on. I think she just wants you to stick around with her.

How old are you? Could she possibly be one of those moms who wants you to stay living with her for a longggg time?

    • I think you may be right....although she's done this to me before I lost my license. Just in general when she's been helping me out. She just seems to forgive alcoholism over buying expensive steaks whe you can't even pay rent....

      100% agree!

How do you behave when you're drinking?
Do you sit and listen to her more?
Are you more placid and amenable?

Whatever her motivation, she likes you as a drinker - which is not good! She's keeping you down.

    • Yes. She is. But a mild one, nothing compared to the volume I drink. NOTHING. I think if anything she more relates it to my dad who is a major alcohic.

Your mom is hateful, vengeful and hot tempered, which is why she has no problem taking you to the liquor store, maybe she wants you in jail cause the dui pissed her off?

Maybe she's getting a little cash kick-back from the purveyors of the liquor store.

This is a classic example of enablement. However, she is enabling both you and her. Does she pick up alcohol at the same time you are?

If she is, you are both being enabled. If she doesn't, then it's just you being enabled by your mom.

This is especially true if she is secretly drinking as much as, or more than you see (the reverse of your perspective where she doesn't see how much you drink). If she sees you picking up liquor then she doesn't have to feel bad about herself.

The first comment relates to this as well -- enablement goes right along with needing the one you are enabling.

I know you probably don't want to hear this, as I know I didn't four years ago, but you should probably attend an AA meeting, or at the very least an Al-Anon meeting. (AA for you, or Al-Anon to understand your mother). You'll find some amazing insights in those rooms.

I'm four years sober now, and just received my license back after 3 1/2 years. And I was in just about the same situation as you are. Except instead of my mother, it was my wife. Trust me on this one, it's more common than you think, and you'll find that in the rooms of AA/Al-Anon. Plus, nobody has to know a damn thing. ;)
