My kids hate me

I'm writing this because my kids hate me. Is it normal? When my kids were teenagers, I went to grad school. I went to a number 1 program because it was the best. I was so excited, until I realized my kids hate me. Now, I am back in town, but my kids won't forgive me for going away to grad school. Was I selfish? I suspect I was. What should I do to get them to forgive me???

I am an adult child, I've had bad parenting growing up, so I understand where you are coming from. You're kids don't hate you. They truly love you, but they were deprived of your affection and attention during your grad school absence. I am nobody to tell you whether deciding to further your degree was selfish, but because you have already done it, now its a matter of moving forward. Talk to your kids from your heart, explain yourself and they will ultimately understand you. They probably have a lot of pent up anger and many questions for you, but just be sure to give them unconditional love and take the blame if you have to. I wish you luck!

Yes it is normal. How to get forgiveness?
    1) explain why you did what you did.
    2) recognize that even if you don't see it that way you are guilty of abandoning them, so apologize.
    3) let THEM clear the air

Why would they hate you for that? Living at home myself, I think I know the real reason. You were probably annoying and always hassling and nagging them. Plus, did you ever hit them? That might've been a reason.

  • Did you ever tamper with them when they were children? If you did this might be why they hate you.
