My hips crack all the time

Really, just all the time.
If I sit for more than a minute, they crack when I stand up.
If I stand/walk/run/whatever they'll crack a few times.
They crack nearly everytime I move.
It doesn't hurt and it's just like cracking your knuckles, but much louder (and, you know, closer to the legs).
I golf and I'm fairly athletic, but I've never met anyone else who's hips crack like mine.
I was really young when I first noticed it happening and I don't have any other issues with my hips.
Does this happen to anyone else?

  • My hips pop all the time too! I don't get it...Mine are not as bad as yours, but it does happen several times a day. No idea what causes it, I guess I haven't been too bothered to put any thought into it.

I can feel it sometimes, like when I am walking I can feel a little "hitch " or something that just needs to be popped. I agree, they are super loud. Huh.

I just looked up at your comment, OP, and just realized once I got an x-ray and this chiropractor drew a straight line across my hips, and you could see that my hips slanted slanted.

That could be totally unrelated though. It could just come down to your bursa and serous fluid in that joint. Maybe you have a higher amount, which causes it to get compressed easier and pop.

I am not an expert in the popping joints of though XD I am interested to see what you dig up though.

    • Yay, we're not alone!!

lol It doesn't bother me much either, but I figured since I was on the site I might as well see if anyone had an answer.

It's funny that you mentioned your hips being slanted. I just checked my hips myself and it looks like one side is a little higher than the other. My legs are the same length, so I'm not sure what's up with that or even if it's relevant.

I've looked it up once before and found something called snapping hip syndrome that sounded promising. Turned out it has more to do with injury and pain than just random snappy hips.

The worst I get is that hitch feeling you mentioned, but that doesn't hurt or anything... lol I don't know. If I find something out I'll let you know, but I'm not going to worry about it. It's just some weird thing my legs do XD

      • UPDATE: I had to give a speech yesterday, and as I was getting my powerpoint ready to go, my hips cracks super loud. Everybody looked at me in amazement.

        • Behold! The Eighth Wonder of the World!

lol I got the same looks during a silent reading period in High School. First time I realized it was something unusual ^^

From reading your comment, it does sound like you probably have scoliosis. You'll have to see an Orthopedist or get your GP to order an x-ray and then refer you to another doctor.

        • Wow, thank you for being so concerned! Scoliosis was ruled out at my last physical, but I'll be sure to mention my hips the next time I see a doctor. Probably after the holidays.

It could either be a muscular or skeletal or nutritional deficiency. Do you drink commercial cows milk? Do you eat GMOs? Do you exercise?

    • I'm not going to rule anything out, but like I said, this has been happening since I was really young (I think I was 11 or 12 when I started noticing). If it was something like that I would probably have more issues than just noisy hips. I don't drink milk that often and I'm not sure about how many GMO's I eat, probably not more than your average American. I work out regularly about three times a week and try to fit in cardio whenever I can. I could be in better shape, but I'm not overweight.
So... yeah, still not completely sure what's up.

Okay… But for the time being try to incorporate Goat or Sheep milk into your diet. Goat is lower in lactose than cow and it is easier to digest. Commercial cows milk has been shown to cause osteoporosis. Always get it from farms that feed their herd 100% grass.

Do you eat foods containing protein?

Also, is your spine in alinement or is it curved? If you have something like scoliosis that can cause issues with the hip as well as some other areas of the skeletal system. I have it and I have had strange and excruciating issues with my hip but, thankfully, it hasn't happened recently. What it felt like was if some part of my spine got caught up in a part of my hip. Whenever this would happen I would be barely able to walk or stand up straight.

I definitely think that you should see a bone or spine specialist.

My ankle. I think it's a tendon snapping around a bone, like it's on the wrong side of something, but I'm not sure. I'd find out if your legs are the same length, hips are at the same height. If not, I'd correct the leg length discrepancy and see if that corrects the snapping.

    • Huh. I never thought of that. I think my Grandpa had uneven legs so, yeah, that could be it.
If that's the case then it might explain more than just my cracky hips. Something to think about, for sure.
Thanks, I wouldn't have thought of that on my own :)
