My girlfriend is a broken record (mp3 player)

My girlfriend has about 20 stories of her life (her first car, her first fight, graduation, birth of her kids, etc). She's 26 and has lived in the same town her whole life.

I have stories too. When I tell someone a story, I make it a point to not re-tell that same exact story to the same person. In the rare instances that I am repeating myself, I try to highlight different aspects of the story to get my point across for the current situation without boring the listener.

My girlfriend doesn't even try to do this. She'll tell me the same stories over and over again like a broken record. Everything is completely the same when she tells her stories too; the details, her emotions, tone in her voice (it's like watching a rerun of a television show). I liked her stories the first time I heard them. Now we've been going out for 3 years and I've heard each of those "life stories" about 300 times a piece. She has no point to telling them either, I don't get it. I can't even respond to these stories anymore; I can't pretend to be interested in something I've heard several hundred times already. I just shut down and tune her out when she starts these stories.

Why does she do this? Why do girls insist on yapping about nothing? Before you post, please understand that I LOVE talking to her about NEW THINGS. Things I haven't heard 600 times already. I'm losing my mind!!! Is this normal?

This reminded me of an old boss of mine. He was a relic of the LA punk scene in the 80s and was into his drink and his blow in large quantities. He certainly had an interesting life and told very funny stories but soon he started to repeat himself and would tell the same story in exactly the same way, all the same gestures and everything, just like you described. oh my god after the tenth time in a year I was really getting depressed because these stories were often like 15 minute epics and I had to keep my attention up and pretend every time to react appropriately. He really didn't know his memory was all shot so i didn't have the heart to stop him...

I can't stand it when girls do that (I am a girl btw) especially when the story is basically a giant string of the same damn complaints. WE GET IT! You hate it when guys stare at you when you wear your deep v-necks. Here's an idea, STOP WEARING THE DAMN V-NECK!!

IMO you should recite it with her

  • Wtf. Record it and put all the videos of the same story told in different places all together and post it on Youtube or sell it to someone who is willing to pay. Seriously.

The best thing to say in my experience is during a breath point in her story just cut in with " yea you were sayin earlier" this signals that your heard it before, it's not rude, and if nothig else she'll prolly jump to the punchline or streamline the story, and this is someone you should comfortable enough to just say " babe, I've heard this story like a MILLION times lol" if you sy it jokingly, she won't be offended.

I'd say just tell her in the nicest way possible that you love her stories, you really do, but you have heard them so many times that you are starting to lose your appreciation for them. Tell her you'll take her out somewhere (park, dinner, movies, zoo, ANYTHING) so she can have a new experience and story to tell! That way she will probably forget about the initial sadness of being told she's a broken record, but also have it in the back of her mind so next time she goes to tell you about when she got her new car, she'll remember you know that story like the back of your hand and probably think of something else to talk about.

I know people like that, unfortunatly I had to grow up with a mother like that. Going on and on about nothing.

So if you can't stand her you might want to tell her in the nicest way possible to talk about something else?...

Ok...this is so easy. You two obviously don't get out and live life. If all you have to hear about are old experiences....make some new ones. Go on a road trip, take a nature walk, go to a sex shop, a zoo, a museum, bar, take a walk around your neighborhood. Change the conversation.

My dad did this, and in case you see similarities, also the following: obsessively read the newspaper aloud to others - verbal discouragement was unheeded, leaving the room would result in being followed, with him still reading. The stories he told were often about some situation involving people from his life decades before. Often about people I'd never met, and where the story had no educational value for me. He also had neutral emotional responses at times, and was treated for bipolar disorder( including manic shopping our drinking phases, and depressive hypochondriac phases ). Lithium helped all of the above.

Good luck, and take care of yourself first. You can't fix another person, but you can throw your whole life away to an endless energy drain.

Its genetic, half the family on my wifes side are notorious story repeaters. I have noticed when they drink they repeat more, its funny most of the time but other times I could choke them. Im a quite person so I guess it works out most of the time.

...No. I have a roommate who does the exact same thing. Some people just feel better when they talk about something, even if the words are regurgitated. It would be mean to point it out to her, so I just listen to her and try to provide some feedback; the problem is that she's starting to memorize some responses to my feedback, so when I talk to her, she gets Broken Record Syndrome even worse.

I know some people like that and they get really boring it's just because they think they have the best stories to tell and next time you should say can you please not re-tell your stories and I'm getting frustrated so will you?

My dad does the same exact thing. Tell her you heard it already, if she gets offended she needs to get over it, she probably just doesn't realize what she's doing.

  • reminds me of my parents. all they say is "don't talk to strangers" "never get in a big white van" "it was hard living as a kid" they need to hear themselves!

    Comment Hidden ( show )
  • in the middle of her telling the story, interupt with what happens next and say YEAH, YOU'VE TOLD ME THAT ONE BEFORE. Dont smile or look amused. She needs to learn that repeating a story is annoying and lame. GET DOWN BITCH.
