My friend thinks my made up sayings are incorrect

My friend (an English major) is always giving me grief (In a mutually lighthearted way)
About how I tend to constantly make up little sayings that don’t actually exists or alter already existing ones.

He seems to be of the view that they are incorrect. While, to me, given that language is a tool to communicate, so long as the idea is conveyed, than it’s really just a poetic stretching of the words and not incorrect.

Here are some examples of a few “Andrew-isms” as he calls them.

—after giving advice: “anyway... that’s my grain of salt” like yeah that’s my two cents

—you been sleeping okay? “Not really man, I’ve been having lots of moon-filled days” as In I’ve been awake at night.

—“she had such heavy eyes” as in a solid presence, a deep soul, an old spirit

— Referring to someone we are both suspicious about: “Yeah man... idk that guy seemed like he had on a guilty shoe” As in, there’s a little part of him that seems off, guilty, heavy in one foot

Thoughts?

I think the problem is that you are not making anything up; you are simply using existing phrases incorrectly. Although, I'll never understand why anyone would ever be an English major for any reason, especially English literature (I know you didn't see he's a literature major).

    • I get how “that’s my grain of salt” and “heavy eyes” are alterations of an existing ones, but what are the existing ones I’m altering from with “guilty shoe” “moon-filled days” I’m curious?

I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t punched you in the face, having to listen to that constantly.

Mine aren't really phrases, but I say stupid shit all the time like *take the big nap* *skinnamonrolls* *kirbies are the best* *calling people by adjectives instead of their name and then tacking an -rel ending(stinky +rel = stinkrel)* *bibi instead of baby*

“Not really man, I’ve been having lots of moon-filled days” sounds good. The salt one not so much. I think though your friend is wrong here. How would saying come about in the first place if it wasn't for people doing what you're doing?

I said it's normal, but you are using them incorrectly.

The “grain of salt” one I don’t think your using right. And the “heavy eyes” one I’d also giggle at you if I heard you say out load.
