He has osteoarthritis and can barely walk or drive because of the pain. He was given painkillers to take but doesn't because it means he can't drink alcohol, which he drinks everyday all my life I've known him... pretty sure he's an alcoholic.

Alcohol dulls pain and gives happy felling painkillers was pain and can dull senses even make you fall asleep
I could be wrong, but Im pretty sure that taking painkillers on a constant basis, from what I've seen, fucks you up worse than constantly drinking. Id rather have a nice buzz off some shots and beers than be numb from dope, painkillers are basically synthetic heroin.
Alcohol is bad for you, so is oxycotin. Only difference is whiskey isn't marketed as "medicine" And alcohol can also qualify as a painkiller so, why shouldn't people be able to choose their own method of killing pain. Adults can make their own choices.
Painkillers cause addiction too and most doctors recommend them because it means more income to their hospital or to their own pocket. Alcohol surely is cheaper (not that it is the best option, to change one drug for another) and it also helps with one's pain, problem would be that it also boosts depression.
