My dad with alzheimer's

so i loved my dad ever since i was a baby, my mod died when i was 5 and he was the only one there for me, i am 29 years old now and i just found out that he has Alzheimer'z disease, he has forgotten everything we have done together and is now turning into a vegetable, he is also having small changes in behavior,i know he might die from this and whenever i think about him i just breakdown and cry out of nowhere, and i am almost crying right now writing this post. is it normal?

  • It's normal and pretty common. Alzheimers runs in my family a lot too and I will probably get it someday, as if I don't have enough mental disorders already. Oh well, at least I wont remember what I'm delusional about anymore.

    I'm so sorry to hear that. My grandfather got this so I understand what people who have this are like. It's terribly sad. I know there's a way to slow it down or at least, I think there is. They have centers for that. Maybe you can somehow find one of those to help him out so he doesn't struggle as much/as quickly?

    I'm a nurse, I work in a secure Dementia ward.

    Keep talking to him even when he doesn't respond, use all of his senses, find things from the past he can touch and smell and listen to and remember the behaviours aren't him there the disease.

    It's okay to cry. This must be very hard, I can't imagine how much. I believe that humans have a great capacity to adapt to any situation so I think that as time goes by you'll learn how to live with his illness.
