My boss has asked me to dress sexier iin

I'm a woman and work for a company of accountants in the city and as receptionist/PA I am the first port of call for clients visiting the company and my boss, who is a woman, has asked me to "sex it up a bit" in the way I dress. This is my first job since leaving Uni, so Is this normal in these type of firms?

    I don't know if it's normal but I understand.
It's a business and as a receptionist, you're one of the first people clients will see, wanting you to impress them is natural.

I suppose i understands that but she told me to wear heels and tight skirts and low tops. i'm not prudish and she has given me a clothing allowance but it seems a bit sexist. I do get the impression that she sees me as eye candy for the clients. (Please dont think I'm being vain when I say that). the money is great so....

I don't know about everything, but YES that makes perfect sense to me. Just thinking about the front desk receptionists I've seen and it seems normal and sensible to me. I'm sorry but I feel like you are LUCKY to both get a clothing allowance and to be warned about what is really wanted. Most times you figure it out or get replaced. Basically, either do what it takes to keep your job or you will leave it one way or the other. Your choice.

I suppose so and I must admit I do like the looks i get and as you say, an allowance is great. I still think its sexist but I suppose its all part of the front desk job.
I will stay, i love the job and meeting new people, so there was no chance of me leaving.

Tell her sure but the company has to pay for the sexier and much more expensive clothes that you will need. If they pay for your new wardrobe go for it. What do you have to lose? Actually, you might even find better employment and opportunities if you front a better appearance. Showing a bunch of cleavage and ass cheeks does not always equate to "sexier" to most people. It only says "I'm cheap and easy". That is why girls dress that way when they go to bars and clubs. Class will outlast dash any day.

it's normal because first impression is important...
but instead of wearing sexier clothes, why not wear decent office attire that fits perfectly with your body shape.
like, wear short office skirts and pantyhose, high heals. tie your hair.

She's just a creep. Probably a lesbian or bisexual and hoping that you won't think of that.

It's important to dress like you mean business for work, how you dress is part of the advertising... as for the "sex it up" comment, are you sure she is straight? And either way regardless of what she says, just dress smart and as feminine and sexy as YOU want to... that's your choice. As for is it normal, if she is in fact straight I think she has just worded it wrong or the best way she could think of

Maybe not normal, but understandable. If you're the first person someone sees, yes, you need to look good. Don't know about the "sexy" part of it, but maybe the boss just wants you to put a good, beautiful impression on visitors.

Very good female friend of mine is very pretty (beautiful, really), but a little plain. Should show her warm, sexy smile more often. I was chatting with the manager of the restaurant she works for, and the manager said "She's gor-geous..Just needs to smile more and maybe do herself up a bit. I'd love to put her up front as the first person a guest sees, but can't tell her to, what, get hotter, or you won't advance here?" What the manager was getting at was, as "Denise's" friend, maybe I could talk to her about it.

Sat for a drink with Denise, and I did bring it up. Coming from me, a friend (and guy), she understood, and did say, at least Sherry didn't say it..I'd never do it.

Still could be a perv, you know. Not all women are straight.
