My bf hurt me bc i hurt him

me & my bf were @ dinner and he was talking politics and what he believed. he has always been one to talk about his beliefs at dinner with me & it's always been fine. i told him when he starts college soon he shouldn't talk about it so much in the classroom. he was so hurt i said that he would barely talk to me for the rest of dinner. he said he's so hurt and sesnsetive and told me to leave him alone, mind you he's 26 and i'm 18. he later than said i was making a joke when i said that and he didn't want to be the "butt of my jokes" and said my jokes aren't ever funny and i'm never funny.. then later admitted he wanted to hurt me bc i hurt him. who's in the wrong ? i never said that to hurt his feelings.... i was just trying to give constructive crisitim
