Musicians losing your respect?

What would an artist, who you have a lot of admiration for, have to do for you to lose said admiration? Does their personal life affect your feelings toward them, or just the music they create, or both? Or neither?

What a great question. In general, I'd lose respect if the reason I'd initially given them respect turned out not to be true. Like they said they'd written their own songs, but hadn't. Or they were involved in something I found abhorrent.

I don't admire people. I might respect them for their work and for making the music I like. Disrespect towards their fans, ignorance and closed mind is what would make me lose all the respect for them.

Call me crazy but I don't admire people for making good decisions and living perfect lives. I admire people for being a little wild and spontaneous, being themselves, and taking the good with the bad in life. So personally, none of these things would make me lose respect for an artist; in fact, I find it almost makes them more artistic.

I don't respect or look up to these people. I just enjoy some of their music. I don't care what they do with their life. I guess the closest thing to one of your options would be making bad music.

Musicians makes music so that's what I judge them by. If that's good then I'm not bothered by what goes on in their personal life.

That goes the same for politicians, businessmen, other artists, and everyone else.

I really don't know. That's a good question. For me, I don't really pay attention to the lives of my favorite musicians but more of just their music so I said they'd have to change their style. However, I don't like musicians like Nikki Minaj because she doesn't seem to have any respect for the music industry or people in general. She pretty much will do anything that makes her money and for that reason, I have zero respect for her. However, if someone that I really like, like Alicia Keys, were to change her style around. It's not that I wouldn't like her anymore. I guess the question would be, did she do it because she wanted to do it and heart is still in it? Or did she do if for the sake of making more money?

This is a really good question and I never really thought of it, honestly. I guess it depends on what you mean by "changing their style" and whether their heart was in it or not. I like musician who have respect for their art and a grateful for what they accomplished. I guess my respect for them is based upon more than one thing, but I'm going to think about this some more because I really don't know. I like this question.

    • Aww, thanks! I really should have put "selling out" as an option. Although maybe I didn't consider it because I view some people who make music more as business people rather than artists. I don't mind people wanting to make lots of money, as long as they make good music while they're doing it.

By changing their style, I just meant something like, lets say a metal band, turning into a techno band. Some fans don't seem to like it when a band they respect start doing something very different to what they've done before. But then again, lots of the times people seem to think it's because they're selling out. I really should have put that as an option! Argh!:P

For me, I guess it depends on what they change their style to. Like, if they change from a sytle I like to another style that I like, then I probably would still like them, but if they change to something I really don't care for just because it's really popular, then I probably wouldn't care for them anymore. I really have an admiration for artist who put their heart into their work. To me,that kind of shows in the music.

If you are a musician seeking an idea for peoples reactions heres what I would tell you (musician to musician). If fans are true fans they will follow you no matter what you do, but you will lose the people who just like your stuff if you change styles completely or do something really vulgar and socially unacceptable like if you commit a blatant "hate crime". If your audience is generally older then they may not follow you if you do something small they disagree with like openly do drugs (but not always the case think about the rolling stones or ozzy ozbourne). If your audience is very specific like if your a black metal band and then you put out a country album you will probably loose a lot of business. If your hoping to try something new, start a side project and be sure to inform your fans about it.

It's hard to say... As my view on such things seem to have changed somewhat. For instance, I used to be a huge fan of Green Day. One day, I saw them do a commercial for the NBA and I felt like they had sold out. I couldn't believe it. Then, I heard about American Idiot, the musical, and I really felt like they had gone downhill. When I learned that it actually had a plot I started to reconsider a bit. I ended up going to see it, but I feel that it could've been much better. By the time they released 21st Century Breakdown, I've found that I'm sick and tired how everything with them is a rock opera. I acknowledge their talent and I'm sure that when the band was first started that they never expected it to get as big as it did, but I don't think I'll ever be able to view them with the same level admiration as I did before.

As of late, there aren't any groups/musicians that I've lost respect in. I've grown to realize that no one is perfect and we all make mistake. I don't even have an active interest in news about the stars anymore. Lets say, a musician I like does drugs. Does that mean I'm going to lose respect in them? No. If they want to take drugs that's there business and I have absolutely no right to judge. I have shown dislike towards "musicians" who make crap music, but I don't even listen to them so what crap they produce has little to do with me. I think changing their music to something heartless and commercial should be consider selling out. I guess another good example would be if a singer goes from actually singing and having "intelligent" music to using auto-tune and singing songs that are empty.

I hope I'm making sense with this.
