Musicians! help with writing lyrics!

Is it normal musicians (and dabblers), I need some help. I was given a melody to write lyrics for and I'm not sure how to even start it! It's really important that I do it because it's by someone I care very much about and to whom it would mean a lot. Is there any way you can help me get started?

I will try and help you! :) 15

Sometimes when it comes from a lighthearted, or a childlike perspective it's just as meaningful and beautiful because it's honest.
Try and write something that's naive and funny - not making fun of the person obviously, but ummm.... maybe little things about them that you like. Insignificant things that you notice.
I know it's not necessarily a romantic thing going on here, but that would kinda be my advice - keep it simple. Simple things in song form can be very meaningful to that person. You don't have to use profound, poetic language. In fact I would advise against it!
Describe them - write about little things they have done that made an impression on you.
    That's what I think anyway.

The fact that they know the song is about them pretty much predisposes them to loving it, so you can really say anything without hating them too much and they'll still like it.

  • I usually come up with lyrics randomly and write it down when i think of a cool phrase and go from there. It helps to play or imagine the song a lot.

    • Thanks, that sounds like good advice.

Try to think of the sounds in beats and then translate the beats to syllables (a lot like how poets do). When you get a feel for how the syllables flow and arrange themselves with each other, they might start forming into words.

Alternatively, try freestyling and just saying whatever comes into your mind, over and over, to the music, until something good comes out.

Think about something meaningful to you...

If that fails just bullshit it.... Like writing an essay...

For future reference kid, from a business prospective if your contracted to wright a song. Then you tell your employer you don't even know where to begin your not getting that contract. Leave it to the someone who knows where to start.

Find something that makes you feel a strong emotion and write down everything you think about it.

Take whatever you want to use as a subject/song material and think of a way to write it with flow and rhythm according to the music you have to go along with it... make a first draft then make corrections... once you've refined it and are satisfied listen to the music and think of how you would sing the vocals to match... its always worked for me

this is a creativity/intuition thing. or right brain.. It's a question of waiting for the right moment. try to relax and meditate a bit, being aware of your breath and your heartbeat. I do it at night while watching the stars and appreciating the beauty of nature. Let your mind be blank, taking it all in, and wait for it to come to you!

This is to ask questions about life, not to scream for help. Try to come up with your own ideas and dont rely on us. Try to get help from REAL LIFE people if your still stuck. The internet is the worst place to look.

I'm a musician who's awful with lyrics too. Just do what Andrew Lloyd Webber did and steal them from dead poets. :)

First of all listen to the melody over and over,
grasp the emotions in the melody.
    Is it a sad/happy song?
    Is it upbeat/ slow?
If it is upbeat you can write something more to the casual or humorous side. If it's slower then maybe write lyrics that are sincere and emotional.

Second advice: count the number of notes in a line
(how many notes are there before a brief stop in the melody line)
Write your lyrics with the same number of syllables as the number of notes in the line.

Third advice: start with the chorus
Especially the first line of the chorus,
it's the central theme/ message for the song,
the lyrics in the verses should build up to that
    central message.

Finally when you have the first draft try singing
it yourself. It should flow naturally. Or you can ask
a friend if some words sound strange in places.

    Forgive my bad english :)
    Good luck!

Think of a central line which marks the beat and heart of music...(Just like Enrique or others do: If I was your lover...)or if the music is continuous..try out rap instead..

Write what you know. It's the only way to write an honest lyric.

What do you know about? Work, women, politics... is the song supposed to be about a certain topic?

        • No, nothing in particular... But it is a song that sums up a person's whole life, so to speak.... all their musical knowledge and lifelong passion for music are in it.

If you need someone else to give you lyrics your not a musician. Tell this person to find a lyricist to write for them before you embarrass them or yourself.

    • This is a ridiculous comment. You embarrassed yourself with it.
