Music playlist categorizations. iin?

Is it normal that I like to categorize my music collection into very specific playlists?

^Now that's out of the way we can get to the real meat of the post. I'll share mine first even though I haven't had much time to put sufficient effort into all of them:

Epic:

For Epic, I feel like I need an explanation first. It's not 'epic' in the sense that the word is often used by many kids to mean 'cool.' For my purposes, epic will reflect the true meaning that the word originally had; the song must be quite long in order for it to go into this category. This category will include certain songs by Metallica, Dream Theater, Coheed and Cambria, Iron Maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. A couple more that come to mind are In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly, and Layla by Eric Clapton (the full versions for both of course).

Tired:

This category includes songs that have a tired sounding quality or feeling to them. Some of the songs I have so far are Soul to Squeeze by Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adolescents by Incubus, For What it's Worth by Buffalo Springfield, and Numb by Linkin Park.

Instrumentals:

This one's pretty self explanatory. Some of the artists include General Fuzz, Jimi Hendrix, Ronald Jenkees, Andee McKee, Apocalyptica, Emancipator, Little People, Glitch Mob, etc. There's a ton of songs in this list :)

Timeless:

This category is a bit difficult because I want to only have songs that I will never get tired of listening to, which is very difficult to determine when first introduced to a song. It's also one of my favorite categories as well, so I'll list out the songs individually on this one. Some of the songs that have stood the test of time (or don't seem to get stale), for me, are:

Bound for the Floor - Local H
The Middle - Jimmy Eat World
Self Esteem - The Offspring
Toxicity - System of a Down
Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
The Breakup Song - Greg Kihn Band
That Smell - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Old Apartment - Barenaked Ladies
Bottom of a Bottle - Smile Empty Soul
What's My Age Again - Blink-182
Bullet with Butterfly Wings - Smashing Pumpkins
The Joker - Steve Miller Band
Jumper - Third Eye Blind
Scar Tissue - Red Hot Chili Peppers
1985 - Bowling For Soup
Snow - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Blurry - Puddle of Mudd
Song 2 - Blur
Father of Mine - Everclear
All the Small Things - Blink-182

Well, that's it. I hope you liked these and I would like to know:
What are the names of some of your playlists and what kind of refinements have you created in your music collection?

    Uh lezsee...
'Dance'- Trance, tiny dubstep, Electro, little house, synthpop, etc.
"Singing'- Songs I don't listen to, but happen to suit my singing. E.g. Adele, Rihanna (some), F.U.N., etc.
Punk- Ramones, Misfits, Sex Pistols, old AFI, etc.
50's/60's- Buddy Holly, Richie Valen, Eddie Cochran, etc.
Alternative/Other Rock- Radiohead, A Perfect Circle, 21 Pilots, etc.
80's/90's - David Bowie, Alanis Morrisette, Depeche Mode, etc
    Misc.- Bjork, Portishead, etc

My playlists are as such because I have more songs to fill certain lists and less for others. For example, Punk. I have songs I wouldn't completely consider punk, but not enough to fill say a pop-punk list, so it gets thrown in there. Dance- well I love a good beat, but I'm too picky per sub-genre to fill say a whole trance list.
I like a crap load of music. It usually stays in the Rock/Electronic Influences. I don't like rap though I can tolerate it in certain songs, I hate country.

I think a lot of people do this. I don't do it myself because I usually have a desire to listen to a specific song or album, and I don't always associate music with moods. Certain Red Hot Chilis songs are a great choice for chilled out, laid back playlists.

I have a few songs which I always listen to in mornings to psych me up - usually fast and energetic songs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhErFZrgcyU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uf3FOEL3KjE
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o558M_sLDz8

Then a few songs I always listen to when I'm working, if I'm not working in silence, usually instrumental tracks that allow me to concentrate:

I don't make playlists though. I tend to only want to listen to one song on loop or a specific album all at once.

    • You have excellent taste in music sir. I don't care for too much punk-rock style music, but I did rather like those first three links.

I liked the last two links you listed as well (they were the same link by the way, don't know if you knew).

Ok, so you catoragize songs, then you put those catagorys in catagorys. Seems a bit too neat to me.

It's normal but for whatever reason, I've never bothered to do this or find a situation and time to do it.

  • Holy shit that's a long comment Bananaface... and a long post... you...

Um, well, my playlists are organized by type, and like the sick romantic bastard I am, the only time I really make them is for a boyfriend or girlfriend...

So my playlists are all love-song related, really.

Really mushy shit, soul, funk, folk, and electro mostly. I do like some rock if it has a lot of bass, and I like stuff like Santana.

    Depressing stuff...

Uplifting stuff... if only I could post... my music collection went down the drain last time I moved! :O

Maybe I should come back to this one.

I love this post! I can't wait to see what some other people post, some of you guys have such good taste!:D

As for me, my main playlist is just relaxing, mellow music; that's usually my preference. So, firstly, I'll start with your playlists and add to them with some of what I'd put under each one. And similarly to you, I'm not going to put a lot of time or "sufficient effort" into this, you're getting the first things to pop into my head. Chances are that you're going to get the stuff I'm listening to a lot at the moment, so it will probably centre around only a few artists (sorry!). Plus, it's not like I know *that* many artists anyway, I'm only 18!:P

Epic- When I saw this word, this was the first thing to come to my mind:

    Ride of the Valkyries: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V92OBNsQgxU

^That^ is the epitome of epicness, in my opinion.:) It's not long, though. Also, I feel like even though this one isn't really long, it still does match (my understanding) of the word epic:

    The Boxer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3LFML_pxlY

Is it just longer songs you want? If so:

-Perfect Sense (Part 1&2)- Roger Waters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVNb0Sft0vA- can't believe how few view it's got!:O)
-Cygnet Committee- David Bowie (Station to Station might fit well too)
-Shine On You Crazy Diamond- Pink Floyd
    -Birdland- Patti Smith
    -Fools Gold- The Stone Roses
-Stay Together- Suede (I owe this one to dappled, who mentioned the band on one of my posts; thanks!:D)
-Riders On The Storm- The Doors (I suppose "The End" might be better suited, but I prefer this one)

Ehh, not sure if those fit, but I love them all (particularly the first 6). And, thinking of it now, surely Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen deserves a place too?

Instrumental- I love instrumental music, and I'd love some recommendations for this one. One of my favourite albums has quite a few songs which I consider instrumental:

    Low- David Bowie:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkNmilE9ibk
I'm particularly fond of Warszawa, Subterraneans, and A New Career In A New Town.

Tired- this fits well with my mellow music collection, I guess. Hmm, which to choose!:/

-Sometimes- My Bloody Valentine (one of my ultimate sleepy songs; I love it! Also, I'm really loving Only Tomorrow from their new album).
-Separator- Radiohead (loads of Radiohead'stuff can fit into the mellow category, such as: Bulletproof...I Wish I Was, The Tourist, Motion Picture Soundtrack, High And Dry, Sail To The Moon, Nude, House Of Cards, Lotus Flower, Exit Music (For A Film), Go Slowly, True Love Waits, No Surprises, etc etc.)
-Song To The Siren- Tim Buckley (and just a bunch of stuff from his son too, namely his cover of Hallelujah).
-Oh Comely- Neutral Milk Hotel (and I owe this one to the user kingofcarrotflowers, so thanks for that:D!)
-I Know It's Over- The Smiths (these pretty much just deserve their own category, to be honest! I'll limit this to my favourite of their more mellow sounding stuff: This Night Has Opened My Eyes, Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want, Suffer Little Children, Reel Around The Fountain, Back To The Old House, etc etc.)
    -6 Underground- Sneaker Pimps
-Hyper Chondriac Music- Muse (pretty much just a slowed down version of Hyper Music)
-Sea Within A Sea- The Horrors
-The Bewlay Brothers- David Bowie (his cover of Wild Is The Wind too)
-Little Wing- Jimi Hendrix (*only* this version, though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtp9Hj9sEGI- sounds better than the studio version)
    -Sunday Morning- The Velvet Underground
    -Cosmic Dancer- T.Rex
    -Across The Universe- The Beatles
    -Carey- Joni Mitchell

Yikes! This is becoming a very long comment! I'll tone it down now.:P

Timeless- I'm not even going to answer this one, because there are just too many. A lot of the songs I listen to are what I consider timeless! Also, I'm very aware of how long this comment is, and I'm not even sure if sharing music was the focus of the post. That's how I read it anyway, so I hope it is!D: I was going to add a happy, energetic music category, but I think I'll leave it.:S

My pleasure :) Neutral milk hoten are my favorite band. I love MBV too loveless is one of my favorite albums. Whenever I'm feeling stressed I put on to here knows when and it solves everything. Of course I don't mind!:) I'm really glad someone has got something from that mammoth comment.:P Worse still, I was kind of holding back!

Based on what you've said you like, I reckon from my list, the Horrors would be a good one to start with. Sea Within A Sea has a shoe-gazey type sound, like MBV, and they seem to fall into the "indie" band group, I guess. I can definitely understand why some people might not like them, but I do.

And funnily enough, I recently discovered Modest Mouse! I really like them. I've never heard the album, but I'll be sure to check it out and give it a listen sometime soon.:)

Aww, thanks.:) I get that; I'm always looking for new music. You've probably already heard them before, but if you haven't, I think you might like Arcade Fire too.

I was trying to not come back to this post and add more to an already massive comment, but it's nagging me that I didn't mention Simon and Garfunkel in my mellow/relaxing/tired music category! The Boxer, Kathy's Song, America, I Am A Rock, and April Come She Will all deserve a mention.:) Sorry! I'll shut up now!

Edit: Brain by the Jungle Brothers, too.:P Oh, and I don't usually make playlists either or categorise music, but I usually do want to listen to certain songs.
