Music makes me feel guilty

every time i listen to music i feel pretentious and guilty = that's because i don't really understand/ have a strong taste, and so whenever i listen it's only stuff that makes me feel remotely cool but in reality i'm just being a dick, a disrespectful dick and if someone that actually understood the music would see what an ass i am he would resent me =(

Good on you for telling him what he should like, right after he basically stated that as his problem.
Dude, no reason to feel guilty and pretentious. Maybe music just isn't your thing. Believe it or not there are people that just plain aren't into music because they don't get it. Get over the coolness thing though.

Aww :( You'll find yourself one day. You just need to get away from/not care about the people you are trying to impress. I personally love music, but if you don't enjoy it, that's no problem. I hope you find your peace of mind sometime.

Feeling guilty gay? You know what's gay? Is trying to closet someone who's having a spiritual awakening like our subject here.

Back to our subject. Wow! You have realized something great by questioning your relation to music.
First: the entertainment industry is fostering people's belonging feeling to a genre, thus creating the sense of superiority by choosing their group. Reason: units moved.
Second: Not liking music. You're touching a sensitive issue as you feel unfulfilled in your appreciation. You question how you should appreciate music and your own expectations of it. Totally valid, medias are submerged with bands trying to make a quick buck and fuck groupies. And the quality of music gets more dilluted every year since like Mozart in 1756.
the medicine check out Dr Hook - Cover of the Rolling Stone on youtube

In conclusion, these days, I go for slap-happy tunes with cynical lyrics

  • You don't like being a fake & a poser. Thats good. One less pawn.

You could try a music appreciation course. That would teach listening skills & open up musical doors.

There is nothing wrong with commercial music, but it is extraordinarily narrow and driven by big business marketing to youth.

oh whatever music is meant to be enjoyed. I used to only listen to "elite" music but the "hidden" songs on my ipod outnumbered the elitist crap. The music industry just markets images with their music to try and make money. Music is universal. Listen to whatever you enjoy!

Listen to 4'33 by John Cage, I think it suits you perfectly.

  • If you don't like music then don't listen to it, or listen to a different genre until you find something you like. BTW there are people who don't like music at all, I think they are weirdos, and I have met a few myself.

music is very useful in my opinion. it helps us astablish who we really are and what makes us tick. if the song makes you feel emotional then that is good, this means that your connecting with it.

try listening to different genres or concentrating on the lyrics. if you own an album which has the lyrics with it try reading along with them. i allways find the best way to understand a song and too know if you like it is to know what the artist is singing about.

don't follow the crowd on what they listen to listen to the music YOU want to listen to.
