Music helps me with depression

I've been feeling like crap lately, hurting myself and all that, but music has always helped me. Especially Elliott Smith. Just the other night, I was flicking through a book about him and I realised what an idiot I was being for not trying hard enough. He was an incredible, talented guy and here I was feeling sorry for myself and not being able to care about anything. So, that just snapped me out of it.

Okay, I didn't really want to know if it's normal :P, but I just wanted to share that and see if anyone else has experienced something similar.

I hate all this depressing type stuff, it's just noise to me. The vast majority of lyrics are just shit and irritating and fucking stupid. It's the music that interests me, that's what sends the shivers down my spine and magically makes everything make sense

I had been helped with depression by listening to My Chemical Romance after a friend's advice

Music has done ALOT for me in the same way. Bob dylan's my music God/guru though.
Movies can keep you company and exercise can activate endorphines and drugs can numb you so you don't care, but music is the only thing that can actually help lift the spirit in an almost literal way. It's almost divine what it does inside you.

Yes, I really loved how you put that, thank you. Bob Dylan is a legend in my books too.

xD definitely. I like how when you're plugged into some music, it's like it changes your surroundings completely because you're having your own private concert.

I listen to music all the time when I'm depressed. I even made up some "depressing music" CDs... volumes 1, 2, 3, etc. I find it really helps. You would think depressing music would make me feel worse, but it actually makes me feel better. Blink 182 - "Adam's Song" is a good one, for instance.

I know. The thing is, when you're feeling depressed you don't always feel up to listening to very "happy" music because it grates on the ears almost. It works either way really. The music always has to match my mood. Depressing music CD? Great stuff haha :)! Adam's song is a good one because it's so uplifting I think. The music and the message make me feel better. It's depressing but not hopeless. I guess it feels good to know that you're not alone.

I'm glad you got through it and didn't give in (hugs). Hope things are much better now. Yeah music seems to be one of the best things for clearing your head :) Still, give yourself credit for being able to turn it around like that.

I feel the same way. I find that hearing a song influenced lyrically by depressing realities is comforting. Perhaps it just helps to know that you aren't alone in the world o depression, to know that you aren't the only one to suffer.
But Elliott Smith stabbed himself in the heart, be careful... Perhaps his music could inspire you to do the same!

Heh, no worries. The beauty I find in the music inspires me to keep on living.
I miss Elliott :( I hope that one day I can be even a quarter as talented as he was.
