Most people look the same/similar to me

I can't really remember how a lot of people look because they seem to have a lot of similarities with other people. the only way I really tell them apart is by hair shape, weight, maybe eye color and hair color. so if someone changes any of these i don't know who they are, someone at my work had the same hairstyle/color, roughly same weight, as another and i always wondered why sometimes he was called "charlie" and other times some completely different name, i thought they were just messing around doing code names as a joke until about a month later i realized it wasn't the same person. even sometimes i see people in a crowd i don't know if they are my parents or not. people have called me racist for this because most black people look the same and most asian people look the same to me, but the only reason why white people are easier to tell apart is cause they have more hair colors/shapes and eye colors but still i cant tell that many white people apart either. IIN?

  • This is called Prosopagnosia.
I have a little bit of trouble with this until I get used to someone and see them all the time. I often confuse people for each other when they are new characters.

    • Yeah my friend said I might have this cause I tell him "that guy looks like you" a lot and he said "no, everyone with glasses and curly hair looks like me to you"...

Not that I would know and I'm kind of of regretting this as I type it but could it be some form of autism? Ask a doctor, please.

Despite my lack of information, I am certain that it is not normal.

I am somewhat the same way, although as I've aged I've gotten better. I've always thought of myself as abnormal because of this, so I have to vote that you are abnormal.
I deal with the public in sales. I can't tell you how many times I've been in a conversation with a prospect, they leave for a minute and while they're gone somebody else comes by and I resume my sales conversation because I think it's the same person, when it WASN'T. I feel sooo stupid when they look at me that way with that "you are a moron" look on their face.

I used to be very quiet and shy and self concious, and so I was more focused on myself than on the other person. As the years went by and I became more comfortable around others I was able to pay closer attention the details of their appearance, and I actually reached the point in upper middle age when long after talking with a stranger I can often close my eyes and see their face in my mind.
It is so refreshing to have overcome that disability! Finally, they DON'T all look the same!

    • What's more embarrassing when I worked with people is when it IS the same person come back 5 minutes later, and I greet them a second time... they just look at me like I'm an idiot :(
I think it does have to do with anxiety. I have always been nervous around people so I can't really focus on them much.

How are you with detail? Sounds like you are oblivious to the world around you.

    • Could be yeah. I've been told I don't look at the big picture much

This is normal. Except in my case the managers are all different genders and races, yet they all look the same to me because they all wear red shirts and khaki pants.

  • Definitely not normal facial recognition is a basic human instinct
