Most people i meet seem incredibly dumb.

I consider myself of average intelligence. I perform well in school but I doubt any universities will invite me as a guest speaker anytime in the present. Anytime I go out in public I feel more and more like Luke Wilson in Idiocracy. I am aware that there are at least some semi-intelligent people in this world but the number of dumbed down individuals I meet almost everyday is starting to become alarming to me. Most seem to be only concerned with money, drinking, and getting laid. I party whenever I have the free time…but for god sake does anybody balance out dumb fun with gaining knowledge anymore ? I think being dumb has now become trendy, and more people with slightly above levels of intelligence are becoming outcasted. People call others “Geek” and “Nerd” like it’s a bad thing, ignoring that it is the geeks that develop the cell phones and computers you use so you can lyke totlly txt ur frendz witout eva goin outcide da houze xoxo ;-)…I could be wrong, but these are only my personal observations. It seems like voluntary stupidity is growing like a virus and the larger it gets the more I lose hope in this generation…Can anybody else relate ?

I've thought about that and it's very depressing.

    • Find people with your own values. You are talking about values not intelligence.

I believe that there are three factors that tend to present people as being of lesser intelligence. 1) An extremely limited view of the world (world news, geography, national and international political events) 2) Inability to discuss any topic with an open mind. 3) Priority of self-gratification.

People who lack these traits are not necessarily stupid, they’re just selfish. They tend to be focused on their own little world. This also allows them not to be put in a position of responsibility or to take on leadership roles. Unless of course they’re a politician, in which case they may be a fanatic which discounts the leadership role, but all else would still apply.

    • but isn't this narcissism a hallmark of american or western culture? Are people being selfish because they themselves find meaning in it, or is it done merely to conform to the overall cultural values which provide one with the greatest chances of integrating into the norm?

I agree with what you're saying and believe it's true.
    Unfortunately ignorance is bliss.

It's cool to be stupid. People are smarter now than they used to be, that is important to remember, but it is also important to remember that it wasn't so effing cool to be stupid before now.

The problem is people have no ambition or goals other than the ones you have mentioned. I don't get it either, it's like everyone who is settled down and isn't into the party scene is referred to as a nerd. I hate that.

I own up, i'm an intellectual gnat with relatively little erudition and little absorbtion of general knowledge (good retention -- to be fair) Clever I ain't and I know it -- so when I meet young professionals or scientists even who know less and appear to have less curiosity than even I -- man i could be getting a little depressed..

  • Yes, I feel this way in every socially normal occasion, such as during weddings, parties during new years or Christmas or any other western celebratory occasion where I want to discuss the history of India or the sociology of science or biological variation in nature rather than the seemingly useless comments on the weather or some tasteless joke. I'm no pessimist, I just love all the information the world has to offer, and I hate how the library isn't seen as a better place to be than a club or the mall. I mean, fuck consumerism and drugs, how about reading a damn book, Pretty Please?

I think it was Einstein that said "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe."
But seriously, there are a lot of stupid people out there. There always have been, and there always will be; I don't think its getting worse.

Yes, I feel the same way. People I meet can just be total idiots. They just don't get it.

How can you be of average intelligence if most people are stupid? Are you saying that most people are stupid and that you happen to be one of them? I know that's not what you mean, but if you're going to say most people are stupid, your argument should be faultless.

I used to think that I was of average intelligence but then I started meeting so many incredibly stupid people. I've come to the conclusion that you no longer need to be very bright to be of above average intelligence.

      intelligence is not = stupid

If you have higher intelligence that means you just have more chance to become smart.

People with very low intelligence don't have chance to become smart, but with average intelligence you have, and even more chance if you have high intelligence.

Yeah so many people seem so asleep and don't know what's going on and don't know much of anything. It frustrates me more when these people have jobs while I've been unemployed for nearly a year! I've found myself being more knowlegable about products in stores than the associates, yet they're the one with the job! Grr!

Hitler probably felt the same way. Just kidding. People are pretty stupid. I include myself in that generalization. Lots of people think I'm this really serious skinhead leader or something. Obviously my profile is supposed to be a joke like Bruno or something. The average person on the Internet cannot figure this out.

If you let millions of conscious entities evolve together for centuries you will always measure an average cognitive capability, with some dangerously uninformed ones on one side of the spectrum and the brainiacs on the other side. On average, the uninformed are in awe of the mass en the brainiacs will realize that they are clearly applying more knowledge.

Remember the following quote "it is easier to fool people than to make people realize that they've been fooled" by Mark Twain. Most people aren't necessarily stupid, but it is certainly easier to fool someone than to make someone realize that they've been fooled mainly because people these days are bombarded with too much information. And they are given too little time to process this information to determine if it is accurate or not. If you don't want to be fooled by other people, do research on both sides of a debate. Or better yet, don't spend too much time online searching up, and doing research on pointless topics that have little relevance to your daily life.

I was searching for "most people are stupid" and find this page.

I totally agree with this. Also I feel like people who are stupid (with average intelligence) have more chance to success in school, and then at work, to do every task you give them.. But they won't do anything else in life except that. I think that is because they are not informed about other thing so they just don't know, and so have more time to study - be more focused.

I also didn't know many things, I did't have information to start, but I was looking for knowledge and you will find it step by step and after that everything become easier.

But someone else will never stat thinking like that and it will be like you in beginning.

Main reason why do I learn is because I never know what I don't know.

Intellectualism isn't all there is to life. Other people prioritize other things. Everyone looks stupid from your own point of view because you judge them from your own standards, which automatically makes you awesome and everyone else retarded. Just get out of your head.
