For me it's between The Beach Boys and Pearl Jam. I think Elvis was overrated too, not because he wasn't talented--but because of how high he is placed, it's so exhaggerated. The "king of rock?" No way.

Gems, you are very smart, but in all honesty, Pearl Jam isn't anywhere near as good as they used to be. Some of the stuff is still passable though.

  • Grrr. It's annoying when people say The Beatles are overrated. They're great musicians and songwriters and people fail to accept that. But, they weren't the only ones. Genesis is my second favourite band and they are also great. Tonnes of bands are as good as each other.

The thing people forget is: it wasn't just their music that made them famous. It was their story. The story of the Beatles is easily the most exciting tale that has ever emerged. So many interesting things happened to them. In fact, their story IS BETTER than their music. Their music is brilliant, but the tale of how everything came together is extremely fascinating.

To be honest, the only act I truly think is overrated is Elvis. He is not The King, he's not that perfect, although he was a top-notch showman.

TT454,, So your opinion is Elvis was overrated ? I have never heard of ANY OTHER group on your list that did things like what Elvis did. Elvis came back to his car one day, an elderly lady was in and admiring it. Elvis asked her if she liked it, she said yes, he took her down and bought her one that same day. Thats more than a KING of Rock and Roll, Thats a Truly Good person. Oh and I see you have the molester jackson, he sure as hell was not the king of anything except his own little world where he get kids drunk and do weird shit with them. and he was the "self proclaimed" king of pop,, yea right. Elvis was called The King by the millions of people that LOVED his music. molester jackson had to proclaim himself cause no one else would.

-_- I want to upvote you for what you said about Elvis because that's awesome, but I don't because of what you said about Michael Jackson.

The allegations were never proven. I don't usually get into this celebrity bollocks but I actually did some research into that case and I see no reason to believe he was anything more than a weird guy who wanted to give back to the community because he'd had his childhood stolen away from him, and he was thus feared and labled a child molester because he was so odd.

To TT454 - I noticed you didn't give your own opinion on the bands. Its easy to insult others without fear of retaliation. Your a loser, go piss off. In my opinion, most of the bands up there brought something new to each generation/era. Except Elvis. All he did was strum guitar and sing other peoples music. Not a creative bone in his body. Even his acting was rather bland, although, we aren't judging them on other skills(or lack of). I am surprised that the Beatles are number one on the poll since there wasnt any bands like them in the early 60's. We dont consider them rock and roll now but it was back then. John and Paul were amazing writers also and developed throughout the years and continued to write "cutting edge" music for their day. Just like The Doors... Simple music but no one had ever incorporated synth into rock. Also Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull introduced flute and clarinet to rock. Sorry i got so wordy. Have a good one all :) except you, tt454. You still suck.

How can the Beatles be leading in the most overrated? They deserved all their attention! Is it fashionable to hate the Beatles? Are there hipsters out there going on about how Iron and Whine is genius?

Even when I meet people that say they hate the Beatles the conversation usually goes like this.

"I hate the Beatles, I can honestly say I'm not a fan of their music"
"Really? Out of their hundreds of songs you don't like a single one?"
"Well there's 1 or 3 songs that are ok. But that doesn't count."
    "And by 'ok' you mean..."
    "I have the lyrics memorized."
    "Well I guess you're a filthy liar."

I think MJ and Elvis should be on the list, they just weren't as important as they were made out to be. Led Zep probably should, everything after "IV" wasn't great at all...

and the Beach Boys have some REALLY shitty tunes.

Led Zepplin has amazing musical talent though. I don't know, I think almost every longer-lived band goes a little weird in the end, that doesn't mean they sucked alltogether. Look at Metallica, amazing talent but their later music just blows, that doesn't make them any less talented. MJ, same, got REAL weird....but amazing dancer and had great vision for videos and ideas for songs. Elvis too, he got weird. I think those guys all deserve their place in music history just for talent and longevity, so what if they made a couple "off" albums.

      • Uzzie101

Well Led Zep weren't around that long! Not much longer than 10 years...and look what the Beatles and Metallica did in that time. Metallica's best stuff was their first 10 years, the Beatles only made 8 years of music...Led Zep went to the top and back down again in that time! However, you may be right about MJ and Elvis. I do see your point, both were around for several decades, and both got "wierd".

      • OppositeofNormal

I completely agree with what you said about Metallica. I love their early stuff, and Death Magnetic was good too. The Black Album has it's merits, but Load, ReLoad, and St. Anger were just ugh. Also, I don't care what Lars did, Metallica made good music, I really don't care if they ruined Napster.

        Comment Hidden ( show )
  • I'm hoping now that that putz Lou Reed is dead, there will be more people who will go listen to The Velvet Underground...then hear how shitty it is...then come back here and vote for them on this list.

  • shade_ilmaendu

Yeah, lets hate everyone who doesn't like The Beatles! Sorry, but their music was simplistic, their lyricism left a lot to be desired, and they're just not my taste in music at all. Maybe I'm picky because I'm a literary nut, many of the bands I like aren't really popular (my favorite band is The Cruxshadows and they're practically unknown in the US even though they're from Jacksonville) but yeah. I can appreciate what The Beatles did for their time but in terms of simply musical talent, I just don't see why they're so praised. I could see saying they started a new movement, historically that's pretty rad. But to say they're the most brilliant musicians ever? That's just taking it too far.

Some artists were more famous by being frontrunners, edgy, bringing something new to the music scene and influencing the course of music history afterward. This doesn't mean their songs are the best ever or something. That being said, I love almost everyone on the list. Except KISS, MJ (shoot me, idc), Celine Dion, ABBA, Bruce Springsteen. How can Janis be on this list?

I think it's also said that people dislike the most amazing artists of our era because they're so popular it's 'mainstream'. Talent is talent. Jimi Hendrix wasn't trying to be on your t-shirt.

I think most of what you listed qualifies. Out of your choices I'd probably go with Kiss because the ONLY song 99% of people know is "Rock N Roll All Night" yet everyone knows who Kiss is and it's ALL because of the show they put on and the merchandise, not the music.

I don't think Michael Jackson or Led Zepplin really belong on the list. Possibly the Beach Boys and Elvis as well.

The reason why The Beatles is the most abundant choice here is because it's many people picking them just to look cool and unique.

To be honest, those people are just sad. It's not cool to hate them, especially if you like other bands similar to them. You can't say you like the Stones and hate The Beatles, for example. Everybody who likes the Rolling Stones generally likes The Beatles, and vice versa.

You know what? Fuck it! Who cares?

Music is all about an opinion anyways so screw it!

But seriously.........believe it or not....some people actually don't like The Beatles.

Trust me, I know it's hard to accept. I actually met two people in my 30 plus years who hated Led Zeppelin, but I just bit my lip and carried on.

p.s. Led Zeppelin has been, and will ALWAYS be my favorite band of all time!!!!!! ......but I still put them on the list.
