Most effective hangover cures?

I can usually quell the discomfort of a "morning after" by drinking strong coffee and a greasy McDonald's breakfast, but sometimes I go a little overboard and need something more. What's worked for you in the past?

  • A teaspoon of cayenne pepper mixed into a glass of warm water. Peppers are good at increasing circulation to all parts of the body. It helps get rid of headaches and body pain.

After a night of drinking we would go someplace for breakfast and I would always order grits with my breakfast. Also before going to bed I would take tylenol and drink Coca-cola.

XANAX! Completely and fuckin utterly xanax is the cure. Or just get drunk again. But if I have none and have to face my binge hangover sober I like to take a bath then catch up on some movies Ive never gotten around to watch yet. And complete isolation from the outside world is much needed as well. No phone, no answering the door, no looking out windows, no human contact at all. Thats my cure.

Water, water and more water. Alcohol is a dehydrator and that is why you get a hangover. If you can manage 12 to 15 ounces of water before you crash, you may miss a hangover completely; if not a few more glasses upon waking. Coffee is also a dehydrator, so it may make things worse.
You should not mix the grape and the grain, as they say, that will surly increase your hangover potential. The cleaner (more refined and aged) the liquor, the less potential for a hangover, but I can't explain why.

Fruit juice and meat (Pepperami/jerky type stuff; Mcdonalds is alright as well).

When I was in Japan, one of the fellow exchange students bought some hangover helping stuff which was incredible. I can't remember its name, though.

Train yourself so that no matter how much you drink, before going to bed take one 500mg paracetamol or other painkiller, and at least two (more if you've drunk a lot) vitamin B tablets, with as much water as you can drink. Don't pee the bed. In the morning, another painkiller if necessary, greasy breakfast and fruit juice. Sex is good, but masturbation is better. You still get the endorphin/dopamine effects, but without all that unnecessary thrashing around. Or finding someone who passes muster at 9 in the morning. When finished, curl up and go back to sleep. If you don't finish, you probably needed the sleep more.

  • I haven't found a cure, but I've found some ways to cope with one that work for me. I take a high-potency B vitamin before bed, which seems to prevent it for me. But, if I do end up feeling ill in the morning, then I take acetaminophen (Tylenol) and dimenhydrinate (motion-sickness). Usually a solid eight hours of sleep is a big help too.

Not much can be done after the hangover has happened as the damage has already been done. It's a bit like trying to wear hearing protection the day after you have been to a rock concert. However pure oxygen will help mask the symptoms temporarily, if you know what you're doing making it from hydrogen peroxide with yeast as a catalyst is fairly simple.

You need to take steps to reduce the hangover when you are drinking. Best thing you can do is take a teaspoon of milk thistle seeds before you start drinking another teaspoon before you sleep that night and another when you wake up. This helps immensely, I've done it and everyone I know that has tried the same thing it has helped.

Drinking water before you sleep helps too. I find forcing three big glasses of water down before I sleep has a great effect.

Also making your own alcohol by brewing sugar wine helps a huge amount since the absence of preservatives and negative by products means a much cleaner product. Alcohol from the store both has many preservatives and is contains higher rates of fusel oils and methanol which contribute to hangovers.

Milk thistle seeds? I hadn't heard of taking those, but will definitely give it a try. I've also had luck with chugging Powerade (even though it's loaded with sugar and not good for you) and eating a big meal that makes me sleepy (like turkey or something else containing tryptophan). If I can take a nap at some point in the day, I'm usually fine by late afternoon. I used to pop Advil before passing out (which usually helped ward off a headache), but it's not good to take an NSAID with alcohol in your system. Damned if you do, damned if you don't!

In my 20s I would take NyQuil and sleep it off, but that's also bad for your liver.

Definitely give the milk thistle seeds a shot next time. I find them a godsend for hang overs. Pretty cheap too.

drink loads of water. have a greasy breakfast, bacon and eggs. followed by a swim at the beach, then an afternoon sleep and a couple of painkillers.

These days when I'm drunk I try and drink as much water as possible before I crash out, 2 - 3 litres, plus I take a couple of painkillers. I'm normally fine the next day.

Dude, there is no hangover cure...
The only thing you can do after a rough night is sleep! And drink water.

But here is a tip on how to drink more, whithout getting drunk as much.
I always eat something, before drinking
I always drink water, before and durring drinking
      I don't mix alcohol... much...
After drinking I drink water and eat a sandwich. Then I go to sleep, waking up the next morning without a hangover.
And me and my mates, we drink a lot.
3 guys- 2 bottles of vodka, one bottle of home brewed spirit and 6 beers.
All of us were ok on the next day.

Would you like the technical answer? 'Cause their is no real cure for hangovers, since the alcohol will stay in your body for X amount of time until the liver cleans it out.

The non-technical answer is mostly sleep, water, and a long, cold shower.

    • Shelbs

I think you got the technical and non-technical answers mixed up.

To add to the technical list, I heard eating bread will soak up all of the alcohol in your stomach.

      Comment Hidden ( show )
    • SuperBenzid

There is no technical answer. It is not well understood what causes a hangover.

Also hangovers tend to appear when the alcohol leaves the body. Hence, even from what little we do know, you are demonstrably wrong. Hangovers happen after the alcohol has passed through.

Oh, whoopsie daisy, I was somehow thinking "drunk" instead of "hung over." Thanks for telling me. Though, I guess half of my answer still applies.

I should rephrase it to say "mask the symptoms". Obviously I know there's no true cure.

Im immune to hangovers but my mates say the reason you get hangovers is because you are dehydrated so if you drink enough water during and after you drink you should be fine. Everyone swears weed is a great hangover cure which I wouldnt doubt at all. Or just dont drink as much.
