Money buys happiness!

Given how many things we have in this current time we all get happiness from Playing X-box or watching TV. A few days a go I had a discussion with a friend of mine about how everything costs money. Please state one thing that can give happiness but not cost money. I bet I can prove you wrong.

Yes. 29
No.(Give a reason.) 13

    Family.
    Friends.
    Love.
    Sex.
    A feeling of community.
    Street performers.
    A guy walking around campus giving everyone a free chocolate bar.

    All of the above and more have made me happy, and I have never paid for any of them (directly or indirectly), nor have I had someone buy them for me (apart from the guy giving out free chocolate).

    Sex with a person who loves you.

      Unless... they love you because of your money.

        But then it's the fact that they love you because of your money coupled with your knowledge of the fact that brings unhappiness, as opposed to being unhappy because you're having sex with someone who loves you. It's almost a counter-lemma to the original proposition.

        Other lemmata would be: they're also having sex with other people and this wasn't clear from the parameters of your relationship, they don't love you but only think they do or are incapable of love, they're with you because of the lack of anything better.

        I wouldn't include all these in the original statement, though, in the same way the weather report doesn't list all the unexpected and unpredicted things that could happen if they had have been predicted. I.e. it'll be a warm, sunny day unless we haven't predicted rain, thunder, snow, hail, cyclones, tornadoes, whirlwinds, ball lighting, showers of frogs, or a meteorological Godzilla rising from the surface of the ocean and crushing Tokyo under its watery foot.

        Logically, you're correct. But very few statements are axiomatically irrefutable under any circumstance and I could add "unless it isn't" to nearly anything and be quite correct about that. The skill is not in recognising the lack of blackness or whiteness in a component of a situation but realising that one component can be many components, each polarised against one another. When taken as one component, my statement is also correct.

        So everyone's a winner in this particular lottery!

          The post said that anything that brings happiness costs money. Not that money brings unhappiness.

          Having sex with someone who loves you brings happiness. This didn't cost money and is a good example for the post.

          If that person loves you and is having sex with you because of your money, then in a sense it did cost money.
          No more complicated than that!!!

          Sp stick your lemmata up your axiom!!!

            The post doesn't say anything that brings happiness costs money. It talks about some things that bring happiness to one person (the writer of this post who implies we all get happiness just because they do).

            It then talks about how everything costs money and asks for examples of things that don't so that anyone replying can be proved wrong. I thought of one so I answered. If you haven't yet read the post you've responded to, it's still there.

            I'll ignore your last statement out of deference to you. If you don't want that, I'll happily explain further.

            P.S. I really don't like being told to do biological things to myself. But, also, what are you achieving with these demands? It's not helping your case.

              Yes, of course I read your first post and it makes perfect sense.

              So does the one above.

              I responded to your second post because it was concisely written, irrelevant gibberish.

              This is not meant to offend. You seem to interpret posts completely literally and then respond on a tangent that has nothing to do with the obvious intended meaning of the post. Do you have an ASD?

    What crap. Money can buy you anything your heart desires, if you have enough. It can provide opportunities that those without it will never have.
    It can make a huge difference in romance, too. It's not necessarily that money can buy love, but it does facilitate the experience and as long as the person with the money is not a hopeless jerk.

      Very true, I hate how people try to make this proverbial "does money buy happiness" thing a black and white issue when there are many shades of grey about it.

    Money has the potential to buy happiness. I can't remember where I read it, but apparently the rich who spend money on trips and new experiences were quantifiably (through a self-reported study) happier than those who didn't have access to those opportunities. Basically, just go do things and you're likely to feel happier.

    Money can buy things you get happiness from but not happiness itself.

  • Psoriano

    Nope. I've had money to spare my whole life and I really haven't been that happy, much to the contrary. People who say that money buys happiness either have no money so they don't know what they are saying, or have money but don't really understand what happiness is, so they think they are buying happiness when actually they are dead inside.

      Exactly my point. In fact, I've found the greatest joy in the smallest things... meditation for example is greatly enjoyable and spiritually relaxing and all you need for it is your mind. Studies on monks who meditated showed increase in the grey matter of the mind and the monks' brains would light up with stimulation when focused on a concept such as love or tranquility. Beautiful and free is the true nature of reality.

    happiness is subjective to the individual and their desires. Some people are happier when they have money and buy things that make them happy. and others are happier when money isn't part of the equation. and of course there is every combination in between. Either way, it's up to the individual to decide if money buys their happiness. Me personally, sure, money buys a little bit of happiness. I like keeping up with the latest technology and going out to eat a lot with friends and family. these things cost money. But i also get pleasure from the simple things in life like taking walks and just being in the company of my loved ones.

    Money does buy happiness. Anyone who says it don't is not rich. If I could buy a friend to amuse me everyday I would be very happy. I could toss them aside whenever I wanted, I don't have to worry about if how much they like me, if they become attracted, or them constantly blowing me off. Much better than having annoying or shitty real friends. I love animals and money will let me buy pets so I don't have to deal with more annoying idiots in the world. If I had money I would make jobs. So other poor people could have money too and they will be happy they have a chance to earn money. They don't have to feel useless and they feel secure they actually get a paycheck.

      Add to that WE created money... we created this burden. All these wars, all of this poverty, all of this blindness are direct results of the existence of money. For 90% of human existence we lived and laughed and breathed without it... so why can't we do that now? Plus, destruction of the monetary system does NOT mean destruction of economy. A trade and barter system would prompt everyone to be self reliant, by purchasing things with things they made, with services they offer and for the price they see fit. In an economy based on money you have people who don't serve or produce (U.S. congress during sequester were an obvious example) still getting paid more simply because they are higher up in the hierarchy(CEO's) while the people who do most of the work get close to nothing.

    • wii3willrule

      Take this for example: you are stranded on a deserted island... do you take out your wallet and go to a Wal-Mart? No: you grow your own food, clean your own water, build your own shelter. In other words YOU can create your life. Money is slavery. Money keeps you in a job you hate. Money keeps you chasing after things that won't matter in a day or two. Plus, the greatest joy of life is creation, using your imagination to create a life for yourself. You only need your mind for this. The greatest sin of money is that it tells us that we are here to experience stimuli instead of creating it.

    Sorry if this really seemed materialistic and that.

    But the way I have seen it...

    And happiness is enjoyment. Not having your needs.

    Please try to think of that before trying to prove me wrong.

    Also I apologise if this post offended anybody. some of the comments look like people are offended...

    Wow, look at this folks, a display of modern materialism. I understand where you come from, but all of the most important things are for free, such as:

    * The power of the Mind
    * Nature
    * Love
    * Life
    * *Being* happy (it's a state of mind, *feeling* happy is only momentary, which is why you inevitably become bored of that xbox and throw that television away)

    Hope this brought some insight.

    Money don't by happiness but it does make life a lot easier!!! The thing that makes me happy is thinking about all the good times I had with my parents before they passed away. With xmas coming up make me realize xmas will never ever be the same now that my santa clause died. All the money in the world would never ever let me buy there lives back.
