    Normal if you're using a real account and not a fake account, with someone's fake picture and fake name and fake birthday.

    Have you met those people in real life? In that case I think it's normal, because you have a natural starting point. But if it's someone you have no connection to it's probably gonna seem creepy.
    Unless of course it's apparent from their online profile that this is exactly what they're looking for.

    All my "female friends" I have met online have started as someone I've just messaged out of interest in them in a non-sexual way (usually as a result of a particularly well thought out / witty post in FB or a forum).

    Actually - make that all bar one (who is now a friend, but I met through a dating site)
