Many great novelists got drunk often?

It seems to me like all the truly creative writers in history were functioning alcoholics, like they just slowly got smashed while writing and that's what made there work so mysterious. While drinking makes some illiterate drunk texters or just stupid, it made certain novelists famous, why do you think this is?

Shutting down the conscious mind with certain chemicals allows for access to their creative subconscious mind for a brief window of time depending upon level of intoxication.

Frequent substance users build up a tolerance and extend the opening of this window at the cost of remaining tied to reality.

It becomes eventually self defeating since the conscious mind is the only thing which the subconscious mind can gain new information to create from.

Stephen King has written quite a bit about his battle with alcohol if you are interested.

Many of the truly talented musicians I knew and worked with, often were incapable of functioning as normal people do. They required managers to manage their affairs, drivers to drive their cars and people to insure that they met their commitments.
Perhaps writers are similarly incapable of dealing with their daily affairs and take to drink and drugs for much the same reason as musicians do.

Sounds like fun as long as one doesn't get ripped off or addicted.

Sure was a cool way for a musically untalented guy to be in a musical group.
